Everything works fine when I try to do these borders, if I want a plain white border. I cannot find the canvas extention colors, or the relative box.

What am I missing? I'm using photoshop 6, but it's an educational version my wife had from school.

PS6 doesn't have that option, you'll have to press D (resets colours to foreground white - background black) and then X to swap foreground and background before your resize the canvas

You can create a PSD file simply by opening the original in Elements and then saving it as a PSD, which will allow you to preserve layers over different sessions. A tiff will give you the same ability.

If you shoot Raw, Elements has a basic Raw converter (the same Camera Raw that Photoshop CSx uses but with less features). You can load a shot into Camera Raw and convert it to PSD or tiff for working in Elements or keeping it for future work, but in practice I'd only create a tiff or PSD file when I'm actually going to work on it in Elements -- both tiffs and PSD files take up a lot of space.

Psd files are created through elements not through the camera. Import jpeg from the camera and then save it as a psd file.

What is a good size to resize image down to before applying these actions? The example was 800x534 pixels. Is this an acceptable size for posting online such as flickr? I would like to make sure my images are not humongous even after resizing them.

The size is entirely up to you. This action is completely customizable. When I made this tutorial I was sizing my image to 800px on the long side, now I make them 1680px on the long side. The great thing about Flickr is that it will make many different sizes automatically when you upload an image.

This action only works in full Photoshop, right? Or does saving as a psd file then enable the same thing in Elements?

This is for Photoshop, I do not know about Elements but I believe it doesn't work for Elements.

create new action
-

  1. resize image from high res -- File> Automate> Fit Image.. put 742 in both height and width (742, as alot of sites prefer 800px as the largest pixel size, if you choose 800, then the time you've added the border you'll be @ 850px)
  2. Sharpening -- Filter> Sharpen> Sharpen
  3. Edit> Fade Sharpen (60%, mode luminosity)
  4. The first border --- Image> Canvas Size -- click the Relative box and put 2px in for height and width, you'll see at the bottom of the dialogue box there's a box at the bottom for Canvas Extension Color, Select Black, hit ok
  5. The second border --- Image> Canvas Size -- put 6px in both boxes and choose White for the Canvas Extension Colour, hit ok
  6. The third border --- Image> Canvas Size -- put 50px in both boxes and choose Black for the Canvas Extension Colour, hit ok
stop recording :)

Thanks for that, very simple to understand. Is there any way of doing this for a batch of images rather than one at a time?

My attempt below with text adde into the action:
