I went to the local pond to take some shots of ducks but this guy showed up and posed for some shots.

Beautiful colors and captures. Are the speckles in other shots of yours? Just wondering if your camera sensor has some dust on it.

Could the speckles be light rain?

Looks like rain, perhaps?

Thanks all for the comments. The first time I shot a bird that big.

Yes, those specs are light rain. It started drizzle and got pretty dark so I had to bump the ISO too.

Nice job with this set. Great colors and very vivid shots. Love the third shot.

A couple more. This was the first time I see a blue heron at this small pond and hopefully I didn't scare him away.

Thanks eccles. These were shot with the 300/f4 non-IS.

300 f/4? You must have been close enough to scare him if he was even half skittish unless you cropped semi-aggressively. How'd you get so close?

I've got a handful of full frame shots of Blue Heron's with only a 200mm lens (on a 1.6x crop body), but those are rare conditions. The bird was very docile, he felt secure in a gaggle of geese that stayed put, and it was late into twilight. I was only 20 to 30 feet away from him with no cover around me or between us. He saw me walk up too, though not straight at him. Rare conditions. Even a 300mm full frame shot is pretty close for these guys though.
