...I'm not sure what I should do.

Me - I shoot mostly outdoor sports (running, track, softball, baseball, and horses) with my 40D & my 70-200 2.8 IS.

After renting the 100-400 and the 300 2.8 last year, I got my heart set on the 300 2.8 and started saving for it. I rented both a few more times in the last 12 months and I really love the IQ from the 300 2.8, but I also really love the reach/range of the 100-400 and I can live with its IQ (especially for most of the sports I shoot).

Last month, I stupidly rented a 1DmkIII for a weekend. DAMMIT. The AF is awesome, and my OOPF rate dropped compared to my 40D.

So, if you were in my shoes, would you:

1. Get the 1DmkIII now and start saving again for a lens; or
2. Get either of the lenses now and keep saving for the 1DmkIII.

Thanks!

Get the lens and save for the new camera, by the time you have enough for the camera the 1MD Mark IV will be out and even better yet.

Yes, but if he said he is getting more 'keepers' from the 1D MkIII, why should he get the glass now?
To the OP, what is the comparison in 'keeper' rate between the 40D and the 300 2.8 vs the 1D? Also what glass is being used on the 1D?
Why not get the body since his 'keeper' picture rate is higher with it? Isn't that the point?

Are you making money shooting sports? If you are...the body is probably the way to go. More keepers=more sales=more income=the sooner you can purchase the lens too. If you aren't making money from your shooting, then go with the glass.
