nice attempt, but shots are always gonna turn out like that when you don't have a pass to get on the field :p
I'll be there tomorrow attempting to take some shots as well :)

This also happens when you get a pass to get on the field...

even with the risk of the camera, I'd take in the net any day :)

I've taken a few good shots in the body, but the camera always wins so far

Well if you are on the field you more than likely have insurance (If not you are a idiot), so a paint ball to a lens or camera is not a huge problem at all.

He also uses a Nikon, too bad it wasn't a red paintball, I could have said Canon was after him.

yeah I've never experienced any gear damage with paintball photography and have taken multiple shots to the body and lens, but now that I said that I hope I didn't jinx it!

Gary Baum will tell ya otherwise, he has seen more then his fair share of damage due to paintball:p

this is the main reason why I've not tried paintball yet. My college team has been asking me to shoot them

If I shoot paintball again, I think I'll get one of the plastic gloves for the camera and use a cut open tube sock to protect the lens.

I have always shot with no protection, no filter. The bodies and lens' can really take a beating the only downside I have experienced is cleaning them. But now that I have a 1D, I'm a little more motivated to buy a neoprene cover for it. I've seen a few of the PGI photographers using those and it seems perfect.

If I had only known you were there I could have gotten you a pass. This year in addition to being a Media Partner and did a lot of consulting work with the NPPL so I am provided with additional passes. In fact I had two photo passes around my neck and additional photo pass vest in my pocket through the entire event, one of my photographers flaked out

The Nikon with the hit on it belongs to Sean, one of my photographers at the event (yea I know…hiring a Nikonioan). He got some really good shots so he seems to have overcome the crippling disadvantage of shooting a Nik

Most of the French Photographers use neoprene covers on their cameras and I really do not see the need for this. I personally use a Kata cover because it keeps my hands clean because they are inside of the bag.

I always use filters on my lenses, except for my 300 Prime, not for protection from the paintball impacts. I use filters because I am frequently cleaning the paint off the front of my lens is a very dirty gritty environment and I would rater scratch a filter then the front element on one of my expensive lenses.

I was shooting at the tournament too - I had a photo pass for the Big Brothers/Big Sisters celebrity games. That was my first time shooting paintball and it was crazy! I got hit right in the lens during the third game - orange pain all over the end of my lens. And I thought I'd been so smart by using my rain cover! At the time i just wanted to get the paint off, but it might have made an interesting picture to shoot through the paint. All the paint did come off without a problem, but I do think I'd want my camera protected from the paint getting into all the joints and crevices if I shot it again. My photos from the event ended up on the JT Sports website! It was definitely a fun day!

Were you the one who gave the Noink shooter the cloth to clean off his camera?

Nope. I had to use a roll of toilet paper to clean mine off!

I was in the arena with the grandstands, but only for the 3 celebrity matches that were in the middle of the day on Sunday.

The photogs who were shooting in there with me were very nice and helpful after they found out it was my first time. I think the biggest challenge was shooting through the mask, which put your eye about 2 or 3 inches away from the viewfinder.

Ryant - you're in Lake Forest? So am I!
