Has Canon's newest flash (580) feature capabilities that can't be used fully on 10D? They are pretty much advertising it for 20D and 1DmkII -cameras.

The 580 EX has a zoom head (just like the 420 EX and 550 EX), and on the 20D and 1D Mark II (with new firmware, I don't know if it's available yet) the zoom head will take the 1.6x or 1.3x crop factor into account. That won't work on the 10D. (I wonder if that could be fixed with a 10D firmware upgrade...).

Also on the 20D (and also the 1D Mark II?) the 580 EX will transmit information about the colour temperature of the flash to the camera, so that the camera can take it into account when determining the white balance. That also won't work on the 10D.

See Canon's information on their website (external link) for full information.

The 10D uses ETTL technology. The 20D and 1D Mark II use ETTLII technology. The 580EX is designed to take advantage of ETTLII by using distance information from certain Canon lenses. It also works with the camera to adjust white balance. Personally I just bought another 550EX. I don't feel the added bells and whistles of the 580EX are worth an extra $200.
