Cycle Speedway has existed since 1946, Four riders race four laps in a sprint to reach the chequered flag which rarely takes longer than 50 seconds as tracks vary in length from 65 to 90 metres . Todays race was between Astley & Tyldesley v Stockport 2006 .

I'm sure all the bikes have a fixed gear, and no brakes

well... seeing that the riders apear to be coasting around the turn, with one foot off on a fixed gear gets ugly fast hehe, since you cant coast with fixed.. look more like normal single speed.. tho hard to say since i wasnt there heheh. either way looks fun

They are definitely not fixed gears. That would be suicide. It is a great sport and its a shame it doesn't receive more press coverage in the UK. What leagues are still in existence in the uk now.

^^^^^ LMAO - Suicide would be fixed gear, clipped in, tight release, zero float. Yikes!!

I don't see any rear brakes on most those bikes though... Which would mean to me they're riding fixies.... Atleast some of them anyways... It does seem odd to have one foot off around the corners though too...

A body or two, a few lenses, a flash, a bunch of other odds and ends, a bunch of ideas and equal ambition... One day i'll figure it out...

Good photos, I like the one of the bail alot. Bail shots are always my favorite ;)

As for the bikes, there is no way they are fixed gear. Probably either single speed brakeless (I ride that on my BMX not as bad as most people make it out to be) or single speed with coaster hubs.

Really nice series.

The style of racing reminds me of the movie "Breaking Away..."

...that facial expression is CLASSIC!!

^^^^^ # 3 is a GREAT pic. The exposure captured the dirt kicked into the air as the riders went down; the face-plant from rider # 1; and that expression from the rider in the rear is classic indeed !!! I've had my share of pile-ups, and now I know what expression is on my face !!! ;)

Single speed, no brakes, on dirt! OMG, this is a sport I'd love to see in the USA. Good pictures and great action, thanks 4 sharing.
