Is canon SX100 a good camera? I have read some reviews from other people, they reported their cameras got lens error and stopped working. Do you own this model? How long do they last? Please share your opinions.
Canon S5 is about $90 more than the SX100 I am about to buy. Is it worth it to get canon S5 for a little more money?
Thanks

If shooting video is high on your list of priorities, the S5 would be superior due to the fact you can use your optical zoom while shooting video. If that's the only reason you choose the S5 over the SX100, then you might consider an S3 and eliminate the cost difference.

You have to establish what you value in a camera before you can decide whether one is better than another.

Did you lose Digital Photo Professional (DPP)? Get it here (external link). Cursing at your worse-than-a-map reflector? Check out this vid! (external link)

I hope you are not relying what the Manual says. Guess what? I tried shooting on video mode and yes you can zoom.

Also if you shoot on Postcard mode you are able to print 11x14 which the Manual says otherwise try it

I'm afraid you're misreading. The manual says optical zoom remains fixed. You can still get digital zoom, which is 4x, not 10x like the optical zoom is.

Also, while you can print any size you want from any image you want (I could print my avatar at 11x14 if I wanted), but Postcard Mode only gives you a 2 MP file, which is too small for a really good 11x14 print, not the 8 MP file you get at the Large image setting.

How long does it last? Too soon to tell - the camera has only been on the market since August '07.

Hmm, interesting because I think I usually have the Dig zoom disengaged, I need to check again. And while I'm shooting in movie mode I'm able to zoom.

As far as printing images captured in Postcard mode> I was very surprised when I was able to take the card to the store and sure enough it was printed 11x14 with excellent details and the original image was captured in Postcard mode.

If you can afford the extra $90, then go for the S5. I was in that delima too, but having a budget constrant and needing something simple & light for my travels, I took the SX100. Took the spare change and bought a Toshiba 4Gb Class 6 HCSD Card.
