would a 420ex flash be good for a sweet sixteen along with my kit lens and my 50 1.8?


t5i with kit lens, Canon Nifty Fifty, Sigma 530 super, Nikon SB-24(2), Canon 40mm f2.8, Canon 28-135 IS, Tokina 11-16mm f2.8, Canon 70-200 f2.8

I used the 420 for years. Just remember a couple of tips.

First, try bouncing the flash off the ceiling. In most cases, you'll get pleasant lighting from the diffused light. You can also rotate the head to bounce off a wall if needed.

Second, make sure you knoe how to adjust the flash exposure compensation on your XTi. This will allow you to increase or decrease the flash power from your 420ex. On the XTi, push the menu button, then move to the second menu screen. You'll see an option called Flash exp comp. Using the down select button, highlight Flash exp comp line and hit the Set button. You can now adjust the exposure compensation up or down by two stops to increase or decrease the power of the flash. Use the left and right select buttons to do this.
