Digital Rebel (what stuff to get)

I plan to get a Digital Rebel soon and I was wondering what I should get with it. I plan to buy a 70-300mm lens shortly after it and also a macro lens.

What other stuff should I get? This is what I want to get for it.

Rebel (Lens Kit)
70-300mm
Macro Lens
2 gb Microdrive

Anything else? What are some good macro lenses that would complement the Rebel? I have seen the Sigma 105mm Macro and it looks good. Any comments on that one? Thanks

You may not have seen my recent post, but I just ordered from Beach Camera. I found that all the internet dealers with lower prices had very low ratings, many based on over charging or not delivering. I settled on Beach because of good rating and pretty goos pricing. The current Canon rebates, if they pan out as advertised, will make this a great buy, as I'm getting the Rebel kit and 2 other lenses.

How much total (with the rebate)? Did you buy the kit lens too or bought 3 seperate ones?

I'd personally go with the Canon 100mm Macro, but that's just me.

Get the BG E1 Battery Grip. I didn't get it for a while but when I did I wondered how I got on without it.

Ill look into the grip. I normally do alot of long photo sessiouns so the extra battery would be a good thing to have. Also I do normally take alot of portrait pics so the grip would be a nice feel when taking them,

The Rebel kit w/lens was $799. The 75-300mm IS lens was $409, the 50mm f1.8 was $78. Other dealers have lower prices for the kit, but terrible ratings. I was very suspicious even before reading the ratings and customer comments. Since I bought 3 separate items, I expect my rebates will be tripled. If so, the final cost for the Rebel kit will be $500, or half the list price. I have no doubt the Rebel will be "replaced" after 1/31/05.

The 75-300 isn't well rated, at least for sports. Check out fredmiranda.com, this thread, and this thread.

B&H has a good reputation and has always delivered for me. I have recently used onecall for a couple of orders, they are closer to me so delivery is faster on West coast. All has been well so far, but have only placed 2 orders with them. I have many years of history with B&H and can recomend them highly.

is the the 50mm f1.8 used for portrait or marco mode?

forget the mirco drive.

it take longer time to write to disc and drinks lots of juice as it is spinning all the time.,.... my 2.2Gb MD sits as spare now. realying on my 3pcs of 1Gb CF

I hope you did not order the Magicstor 2.2 GB microdrive! Is does NOT work well with most digital cameras. You're better off getting a couple of good solid state CF cards.

If you want to read horror stories about the 2.2 GB Magicstor microdrive, search the forums for "magicstor"......

That's just MagicStor. The IBM/Hitachi MDs shut down when idle; I've seen practically no difference in battery life on my D60 between the 1 GB Microdrive and the 1 GB CF.

I had a 75-300IS, now I have 70-200F4L. From my experience, buying a 75-300 is just wasting your time and money.

I heard that you can buy DRebel+70-200L+17-40L for $1500 after rebate, I think this is a good combination for start.

I know that in the lens world (especially if you own a Canon), L glass is superior to all.....However.....Be​ing on a strict budget at the time I bought my 300D (9/03), I went for 2 of Sigmas best. I wanted and needed a 70-200 2.8 and a 105mm macro, and bought BOTH Sigma EX's for a Total of$1200 ....and anywhere you look, they are VERY close optically to the L. I am very please with both, and will now move on to purchase strictly Canon in the future (My holy grail is the 300 2.8 L).

Theyre pretty much close to most reviews Ive seen.

Like I stated before, I spent $1200 for both of those lens'. If I went comparible to the Canons, price difference wouldve been:

Canon
70-200 2.8 L $1100
100 2.8 $ 460

$1560

( but if your gonna get a Canon 70-200....might as well get the IS)......so add $500 more to the 1560 ....total $2060 before tax.
