The Lightroom 2.0 beta is now available and can be downloaded here:

http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/lightroom/ (external link)

The announced feature set looks really good:

* Localized corrections — Enhance specific areas of an image for unsurpassed nondestructive flexibility and control reminiscent of the traditional darkroom dodge and burn experience.
* Improved organizational tools — Find the images you need quickly and easily.
* Multiple monitor support — Add an additional monitor to efficiently manage photographic workflow and presentation.
* Flexible print package functionality — Create custom layouts containing multiple sizes of a photograph on a single page.
* 64-bit support — Lightroom 2.0 now takes advantage of the latest hardware architectures with improved memory handling and performance.

Retouch tool very impressive (even at just 10 minutes of use on a jpeg, I was able to use it to recover a blown out sky, and add some saturation to it without affecting other areas.)

Still no checkboxes next to keywords. :(

In fact, it appears that displaying images based on keywords actually got more difficult than before...

Not to mention version 2 already? I'm quite surprised... (or am I? ) Hope we beta... ahem... version 1 users get a discount.

As usual, I've done a long list of changes:

And there are updated shortcut sheets for download at the bottom of that page too.

Wow,

Playing for 30 mins now and I must say I am impressed. I like it - it feels 'snappier' or faster.

The local corrections are very neat, dodging and burning selective at a RAW level - tinting and color changing locally, clarity!!

This could be big for wedding and portrait photographers (well anyone reallY).... reverse the clarity slider to produce a 'soft focus' effect and then paint clarity back into the eyes and mouth!!! MADNESS

As well, the Vignetting is alot slicker, and feels 'better' (hard to make sense of this so soon). The post crop vignette fix is a long time coming.

Great Beta release Adobe

I think dual monitor support (if one goes that route...I understand the $$$ involved) will help this...

Dual Monitor (actually dual display..you can have a second window open on one monitor) is aimed at making LR more like Aperture(?)

I have dual displays but one of those is amy laptop which is small. With Aperture's full screen edit mode, I do not need to even utilize dual displays. Real estate is maximized on my 23" monitor.

Any way, I am not here to bash LR. I hope that folks find LR a worthwhile tool and enjoyable to use. For me, Aperture 2 set the bar quite high and the chances of me switching tools again is quite slim.

Did you see the choices available on the second display?

One of them is simply a grid of photos which (with thumbnails sized as needed) could easily live on your laptop monitor leaving your main screen fully sized for editing...

I notice the Beta program runs until Aug.
Guess there will be a lot of changes by then.

It's basically feature complete at this stage, but there will be a lot more tweaking to do yet.

Hmmm...the final release of Lightroom 1.0 had a few surprises that weren't in the beta.
