Hi,

I was hoping I can get some insight.
I have been using my original domain name for awhile now for my amateur photography. Nothing heavily marketed. Just used to show photos to friends and family. I will be soon be pushing myself to market myself to a bigger audience. However my domain name does not really suit the wedding audience I am targeting.
I would like to have this specific domain name; however, it is owned by someone else. I contacted the owner and he's being really nasty about even considering my offers.

To the question.
Use the same domain name and end it with a .net? ie zzzphotography.net
Use the same domain but with a hyphen in it? ie zzz-photgraphy.com
Shorten the photography to photo(s)? ie zzzphoto(s).com
Or think of a whole new name altogether superawesomephotographer.com

apologies for the long read/rant

Thank you

Try finding something professional. None of those are.

BE carefull, .net domains are usually used for network providers (ISP) etc, that doesnt really suit a photography business now does it?
Also, if you choose something very similar to the other site but perhaps a little less obvious or with slightly different spelling, you run the risk of people ending up at the other guys site, not yours.
I would suggest coming up with you own unique name, and make it a .com , stay a million miles away for the other guys domain-name IMHO ;)

I would suggest you to go for DotCom instead of others, because DotCom is the most popular one.

Always try to pick very short name and it would be easy to remember

try this:

3Zphoto DotCom or zeephoto DotCom or something like that.

I wish you good luck in your domain hunting and photography business.

Hi

Much as you like the other guys domain name did he have it for sale? I am slightly puzzled why you are upset about him not wishing to sell it to you! Does he use it?

Also bear in mind that in most "markets" using a similar souning business namewould be deemed "passing off" i.e. trying look like the competitor for reasons of profit from that similarity.

Whichever name you decide on get the .com and as I have done in the UK for 'local' market get your "local" one if it exists like .co.uk

Best of luck :)

Use a .com (this is for businesses, .net and .org aren't) and make it as short as possible.

well i politely emailed him asking him if the the domain was for sale, and he said im open to offers. i based my initial offer on the fact that i googled his webpage and only 3 hits came up, the domain name i wanted had absolutely no reference to his website. it was just a redirect to another website. (might have been personal) well he denied my initial, so i doubled it. no bite.. then i asked him if he was generating any kind of revenue or if the name had some sort of personal interest to him. he replied, "im only hearing offers" so i put in my final bid, triple the initial offer. and he denied. i wasn't going to put any more bids on the sole fact that he did not provide me with any kind of hints of what "price range" he wanted. it seems like he wanted to just milk me.
I do understand that the website is his, but come on. if you say you are interested in selling something. at least show some interest in helping me with what kind of offer you are looking for.

so what is so bad about .net domain names? all i know is that they are more reserved for networking.

apologies on the poor grammar and long rant.

thanks!

I agree with .com & defiantly nice and short. Something you can tell someone if you don't have a business card, and they may remember it.

Try to keep it simple & easy for them to remember, or a variation on something obvious. I use .com for my Samples site & .net for the "Sell" site.

There nothing wrong with .net domain names (POTN uses it doesn't it ;))

If you can, go with .com, but if not, go with .net

I would stay away from the .biz as they just look unprofessional for now, maybe that'll change at some point though
