My girlfriend picked up my camera bag with it being unzipped. My Sigma 18-50 ex dc came spilling out about 2' above the table the bag was on. It had the lens hood attached backwards and both front and rear caps on. The lens hood and front cap popped off on impact and I heard the THUD from the other room.:evil::evil:

After inspecting it I can not find any visible damage, no broken glass thankfully. There is a little ding on the hood, but oh well. What scares me though is when I extend the lens to 50mm and wiggle the front barrel I get a little play, I am not sure this was there before because I never checked, maybe someone that owns one could help me out on that?

I put the lens on my camera and it does focus fine and takes a picture. I looked at a few test shots on my computer and it seems sharp still. This lens was really sharp before, so I am going to do a real focus chart test tonight (fingers crossed).

So my question is should I send this in to Sigma just to be sure nothing got knocked out of alignment? Is the play in the front barrel I am feeling normal? I bought this lens a month ago for a upcoming trip to Mexico and I don't want to find out later on that it has a problem.

Thanks for the any help.

Take pictures with it, do they look normal? I would assume everything is fine unless your pictures do not come out the way you expected them to

that sucks. this is how i prevent problems like this:

1. i always clip the clippys (or at least have one at worst, if i'm in and out of it) on my DG200 bag. i left it open a few times, and am thankful the velcro is loud enough to warn me that i was an idiot. now i always make sure it's closed.

2. i remind my girlfriend that my camera equipment, if broken, will most likely be replaced out of our joint savings. i asked her politely to pleeeeeeeease make sure that if she, for instance, moves it off the kitchen table to set it for dinner, to make sure it's clipped shut to prevent accidents.

3. i pray my equipment is never damaged by anything.

good luck with your lens. i hope it's not damaged.

eek, totally sucks. idk, if it seems fine maybe you don't need to send it in. but if you're going to be worried about it then just send it in.

I try to always try to remember to keep my Computreker zipped up. I know one day I will pick up the bag and sling it on and hear an avalanche of metal, plastic and glass behind my.

I tried to bounce my flash off the ceiling once. Left a mark on the ceiling and broke my flash.

Oh man...this is like deja vu except it was my 11year old son who was trying to be helpful but didn't realize that my Canon back pack was unzipped.

I was in my office in the basement when I heard a loud THUD. Ran up to the main floor and couldn't believe my eyes. My Canon 24-70mm L lens was on the floor. :-o:shock::-o:shock:

I almost lost it but quickly realized that it was an accident. Of all people, my son knows how careful I am with all my gadgets especially my camera equipment. There weren't any visible damage so I tested the zoom and focus rings but didn't feel any unusual tightness.

Since my lens was still under warranty, I sent it to the NJ Service Center and had it recalibrated. I wouldn't have done it but I've noticed that my lens was backfocusing even before the DROP.

I have the lens back and it's as good as new and I think the backfocusing is fixed.

Just for your own peace of mind, send the lens to Sigma and have it checked.

Peace,
Yanis :D

About a year ago, my grandson and I were enjoying some time hanging out and taking pictures along a mountain stream/river. I asked him to hand me my lens bag which had the 70-300 IS lens in it. Unfortunately the bag was not fastened, and when he picked up the bag the lens came out and rolled down into a pool.

I spent about 3 or 4 days rotating the lens in and out of a slightly warm oven, and in the end it worked just fine -- my daughter uses it to this day!

yeah I always have it zipped up for this reason, but i had been in and out of the bag a couple of times getting cf cards to download. I was sitting at my computer in the other room and she decided to tidy the house I guess. There is now a rule she does not touch my camera stuff period. She was so scared she broke it she offered to buy me a new one instantly, but thats stupid.

Tonight there will be a proper test to ensure there was no damage I will post pics. Its a good thing she is beautiful (:evil:WHY I OUGHTAA:evil:);) see avatar, love her.
