Today I came across a link on the Canon Professional Network website to a series of videos that run through the features of the 40D. It falls somewhere between a sales pitch and a somewhat useful run-through of what's there.

I was watching it in fits and starts during the TV commercials so I'm not sure exactly how long it lasts in total - maybe 30 minutes - but there is more within the "chapters" than their titles may suggest. It's probably worth going from the beginning and just letting it run all the way through. I've had my 40D since September and I learned a couple of things from it. It could be quite handy for DSLR newbies with a 40D or those considering buying one.

Ahah " Two silent shooting modes are selected from the live view menu setup, they are cleverly named mode one and mode two. " great comment ;)

Yep, I noticed that. I do believe he had his tongue firmly in his cheek when he said that :)

Or maybe the specialized master menu-designing department at Canon signed his check ;)

I pointed out the Canon Professional Network one specifically because it is free, so will be of interest to potential 40D owners as well as existing ones. Sure it's not that in depth, but that leaves room for the likes of Elite to sell a more comprehensive guide.

No harm adding to the list though - here's another DVD for purchase - http://www.amazon.com …dvd&qid=1207208813&sr=8-1 (external link).

I just came across a series of 11 videos on YouTube. I don't know how useful they are - I just started watching the first one. Here it is....

tdodd, i went through those sets first day i got my 40. It's neat 'cause it's like reading the manual but only it's in video format. Nonetheless, it's very informative about the camera settings and such

Absolutely. A picture paints a thousand words. A video paints 10,000 :)

I just finished watching the whole set of 11 - it didn't take long but is a great way to get a speedy introduction to the camera features. The section about Live View really helps understand its use far better than the manual can.

Thanks. I've been looking at it. A good review and a few new ideas for me. I haven't had my 40D for long so it's good to see this. Now to find the one for the 5D :).
