I'm escorting my kids choir class to Seattle for 4 days and I'm in a quandry about what equipment to take. You can see my "stuff" in my signature, but its: 1. Heavy to travel with.
2. It rains a lot in Seattle.
Should I take the 40D and 17-55, or pop for a good point and shoot (if so, which one)? Any suggestions appreciated.

I'd take it all. So long as there are no physical limitations, who cares if its heavy, it's only 4 days out of your life. For somebody living in Scottsdale, Seattle offers more photo's than you can imagine. You'll need it all; 10-20 for all of the wide stuff, macro for the flowers, 17-55 for the walk around, 70-200 for reach and the 85 for pictures of the kids choir.

But it also depends on how much time you have to get out and take photo's. If your time is limited then you should probably cut out the lenses you won't get to use.

As somebody who lives in the Seattle area, be sure to bring a rainsleeve for your camera. It does not rain all the time, but 4 days in a row is nothin.

Seattle's rain is a huge misconception. Occasionally it really rains, but this time of year, it's just cloudy and it barely drizzles, and lots of the time it merely looks like it's going to rain. Seattle gets less rainfall annually than Houston, Atlanta, and NYC.

I say skip the rain cover. I never use one, and I shoot with a 350D. Just don't let it sit in the rain forever (if in fact it is raining--this week we have had gorgeous sunshiny days) and wipe it off quickly after use. As for equipment, that would be a tough call, but I would bring the 17-55 and 85mm if you are just trying to keep it light.

By the way, umbrella = tourist, so if you want to blend in, wear shorts and a light rain jacket. :)

Seattle is a great city and I'm sure you'll enjoy it. There's plenty to see and do, and the variety is incredible here. Be sure to hit up Pike's Place Market. It's a photographer's playground.
