I'm in need of a backpack for the 500L with 1.5x TC and Rebel XT attached. I'd prefer to have the lens hood on right so it will always be ready to go, but I'm not having much luck at finding a backpack that big and under $250.

Anyone know of any?

Thanks

bump.

I'm looking at a tamrac 5578 even though I can't leave the hood attached the right way. I got to get something within the next couple of days so that I can use it on my upcoming trip.

What's the intended purpose? Travel or hiking in the field?
Two solutions required fro these two porblems IMHO.

I have a "Tamrac Cyberpack 8"
It will fit what you describe, but it will never be used to take the lens into the field. To big, cumbersome and clunky. Almost useless in fact for working out of.

For that I rely on the Kenisis bags,. you can buy the optional back pack straps.

I had thought about a pelican case, but decided I really would get more use out of a backpack as I'll be out in the woods alot.

Oh, to carry that thing? Autotrader has some Hummers for sale, i would suggest an H1 for that beast. You could probably get away with an H2. :D

I was going to say Lowepro Lenstrekker 600 AW but it seems to have been discontinued. If you like the look of it maybe you can find a used one somewhere.

Get a long lens case from Kinesis. It is topnotch and Richard is great to deal with. I just ordered a whole setup for my 600mm lens and love every aspect of it, well made and great protection.

Well not really, I threw the idea around to get a new body back in December, but finally decided the the XT was still doing good so I didn't need a new body yet. When it dies, I'll get a new body. And I couldn't afford both body and glass.

edit: Oops, just read my first post and noticed I didn't say anything about my other lenses needed to be included in the bag.

About the kinesis setup, will it only hold the 500 plus body or is it big enough to hold my other lenses as well? From looking at it, I would have to buy other bags for the rest of my setup as well. Am I correct?

Its is a modular system you build to need. Get the Long lens case, the harness/waist belt system and other pouches you need to attach. It is a remarkable system in quality, custom build for great workflow.

Like Steve said, it's modular. It's costly too, but it is THE best kit for lugging into the field.

I use mine for the 500mm with 1D mounted, then I have room in the "body bag" for a 2nd body, and I attached locally available Lowepro lens pouches for either T-cons or smaller lenses like the 28mm f/1.8, 85mm 1.8 135mm f/2L.. and I have stuck the 100-400mm in the side pouches on occasions wrapped in a cloth.

Thanks everyone. After looking at the prices for the kinesis, I just couldn't justify spending that much right now to buy all the accessories I would need.

I ordered the tamrac expedition 8, but it won't be here in time for my trip so I'll be working out of the Canon case. :( It looks like it may be 1/2" too short, but I'm hoping it will stretch a bit.

Well the pack came just before I left for the trip. It holds everything nicely and is very well padded. More comfortable than my Lowepro.
