Hi everyone - I did a search and read the various posts on this subject; however, I am asking for some clarification. It seems Hoya and B + W filters seem very popular. I will be looking at UV and a CP for this lens to be used on a 30d. Do these need to be slim (wide angle) or not?

Thanks

By the way I am finally making the move into digital from 35mm and can't waite to start shooting again. Thanks to all the information available on this great forum I have decided the best choice for my needs and budget to start with would be the canon 30d and the canon 17-40mm f4.

Now if I can just hold out a little longer for the canon spring rebates (if and when) !!!! Don't think I can waite it out!!! Too bad I couldn't make up my mind and I missed that recent wppi code offer through B + H.

Also too bad I missed that Chicago get together, it looked like a good time was had by all! When I first saw that post I got excited as I live in the Chicago area but than I realized it was long over. Oh well, I would not be ready anyway as it will take some time to get used to the new equipment!

Thanks and good shooting!:)

On crop camera like 30D you don't need slim filters. On FF cameras, UV doesn't need to be slim but CPL does.

I actually just made a post about this yesterday here:

https://photography-on-the.net …=478786&highlight=17-40mm

I ended up going with one from Adorama simply because I refuse to use paypal after my account was hijacked about a year ago and I lost 15,000$.

Not entirely true. I use B+W F-Pro filters (CPL, ND, and an occasional UV) on my 17-40L/5D without any vignetting problems whatsoever. You may need a slim filter on the 16-35L Mk II, but that's about it. Many threads have been written on this topic...a search will turn them up.

Thanks for the clarification. I will check out hvstar.com for thier prices and now I know for sure I don't have to spend the extra dough for the thin (wide angle) filters. Great forum!
