This should be a great forum to ask this question since so many people have upgraded to the 40D. Outside of the fps and live view what seperates the 40d from the 400D when it comes to overall picture quality? Does the 40D just help you take better pictures in more trickier situations, such as fast paced sports or is there other features that really seperate these two bodies?

IQ is very similar across the EOS range but yes it has features that make a difference. Faster more accurate focus, ISO 3200 when needed, better build quality, high flash sync speed 1/200 vs 1/250, spot meter, HTR, not to forget improved navigation through the wheel and extra buttons.

I agree. No big deal in image quality, but many other things are "double". Shutter speed, frames per second, max ISO, battery capacity, setting wheels, display size, AF speed, buttons for settings, general feel and so on.

And cost.

So basically the main differences as i see it would then include handling, faster fps, higher iso, and faster auto focus.
I understand peole saying the build is better but i havent heard of many people breaking their cameras, so unless you have weather sealing which is a big plus, it mainly comes to how it feels when you hold it. ??
What i didnt realize is that image quality is pretty equal.
I find it hard to judge cameras or even lenses for that matter when people post their best pictures. I mean i have seen some really good pictures from camera phones, but i know from use that I dont want to use my camera phone to take pictures. Becasue most of them are terrible.
Thats kinda why I asked this question in comparing the 400D and the 40D.

The handling and other features of the 40D will bring you more good pictures than from the 400D. But the good pictures that you do get from the 400D will be good too.
There's a mixture of pictures taken with a 400D and a 40D here. (external link)Take a look at them first, all of them, and guess which camera took which picture. Then enable the expanded information field to reveal the truth.

I bet you can't guess them all.

Click on the image to open it, then click on the mer information link to the far right.
By deafult, it displays date and image size only.

Mer information is Swedish for More information. Almost self-translating.

I just got my new 40D yesterday. My XTi will now be my backup. I can say that I am very very happy with the upgrade. The faster focusing and frames per second felt amazing in my hands yesterday :D Worth every penny. Now I just need to get used to the new set up! Oh, and figure out why it won't download pics directly to my computer

A zero? Sorry, couldn't resist. ;)

The 40D is a solid upgrade from the 400D... But both take great pics. Check out this side-by-side via DPReview:

Looking at pics posted on this forum comparing the 400D and the 40D have pretty much convinced me that I want the 40D. Colors seem way more vibrant coming from the 40D, just my opinion only though.

Don't forget that in the days of film, people paid a ton to upgrade bodies to cameras like the 1v, that used EXACTLY the same sensors as the lowliest point and shoots.

I swear there's times when the colors out of my 40D are too rich. I've toned them down with PS or DPP, but I find that I kind of like the richness. I don't know if it's the 14-bit color, sensor, or in-camera image processing by the DIGIC III processor but it's noticable: (I think I adjusted levels on the shot below, but I know I didn't touch saturation)
