Hi,

For those of you who didn't see / contribute to my earlier thread:
https://photography-on-the.net …hread.php?t=451832&page=7

I am currently writing my dissertation on 'The impact of photography during the Vietnam War on American public opinion'.

One of my biggest problems so far has been finding actual US opinion, I am currently looking for opinion polls but finding actual views on photographs is proving difficult. Obviously this information would be a huge help to my work.

Basically, I am currently compiling a questionnaire asking for people's views on certain photo's published during the period and about other influences. I am looking for anyone who was alive during this period, ranging from say 17 upwards. A variety of people such as students, members of the forces, anti-war movement members and ordinary citizens would be ideal. My questionnaire would take 10 minutes at the most. If you have a little bit of spare time then please please help, this would help my work significantly and would be an absolutely huge favour.

My deadline is May 15th so time isn't exactly of the essence but I will have the questionnaire ready within 48hrs or so. If you can help out then please PM me.

Thankyou,
Adam

Thanks for the PM's so far. I really also need some non military people too to help (if you're military then please still help!).

Honestly, when it's ready it will only take 10 minutes at the max and this would be a massive help to my work.

Also if anybody knows another place where I could possibly contact people then please say.

You're looking for people who were 17 and upwards during that period, right?

I am yes, anyone and everyone who lived in America at that time. I could perhaps be lenient but can't make it too young as most people wouldn't class that as 'politically active'.

Ahh..should be a very interesting article. Please link us when you're finished. I still remember the famous picture of the soldier holding a gun to a Viet Cong insurgent's head. The anti-war folks played heck with it and didn't bother to mention the fact that he wasn't just some innocent Vietnamese civilian. How's that for impacting public opinion? Ohh...I can't wait until you're done w/ this project!

If anybody would like a copy afterwards i'll try make it available, there's pressure now to make it good! I do realise the story behind the shooting yes and it will probably get mentioned.

I'm looking forward to it as well and I cautioned Adam that our memories change over the years due to more knowledge gained about the era or more maturity or whatever.

Least we forget, Ike sent a few, Kennedy sent more and Johnson went all out. All because of some perceived domino effect.

And the dominos fell...

They did? What other country in that area, or any other at that time, for that matter, became a pinko commie state?

"Pinko commie state"...Mitch, you really date yourself. I haven't heard that term in a looong time.

But I think that yogestee was suggesting that the "domino theory", as hindsight, was an invalid rationale for being there.

As Dennis Miller says, "that's just my opinion, I could be wrong".

Well, Pinko commie rat was always one of the funniest things I ever heard repeated, I'll admit that.

Still, the domino theory was something everyone knew to be that if one state fell to communism, then the rest would. It was just understood and had nothing to do with little rectangles of wood with spots on them.

Hindsight is all well and good for those who are around to see it, but, be honest, didn't you believe it? It seemed pretty damn plausible so soon after Korea and just a year before Korea, China went communist. And now in hindsight, the one nation that started it all is now no longer communist, whatever else it may be.

By the way, some of my favorite images from the time, were of Migs taken over North Vietnam. A little seen and little known airplane that every plane buff was interested in.

I did believe it at the time and I believe we would have won, whatever that means, if the military would have ran the war and not the Washington political machine.

But what happened after we left was even more disturbing.

2700 BC...4700 years ago...first recorded war. Such a long time and we have learned nothing. Must be inbred within us.

I'll see if I can get my father to input on this one. He served over there with the USAF and did some photography for the military too. He might be able to give you some good stuff. PM me with your email address.
