How do I do it?

So should I leave some kinda food or sweet sticky stuff outside for a couple days? I just want to attract as many different bugs as possible. At least until flowers start blooming and I can hunt for some really nice stuff

If you mix some feces (yours, dog's, cats, etc.) with some orange juice and make a nice paste and lay it out you'll get all kinds of butterflies.

Sugar/Honey should work for ants and flies.

This seems like a ploy to get me to crap in a blender with orange juice to humiliate myself....

I'll DO IT!

Thanks for the tips. BTW, what time of the year do the butterflies usually start coming out?

Actually chopped up fruit of varying kinds on a small plate is MUCH more pleasant to be shooting over and it attracts as many butterfiles AND other insects.

A tray with a lip, think cookie sheet, place some sand and a bit of dirt on it at very slight tilt and then water to make a small "pond" on the end of it makes a very good puddling place for butterflies to visit and collect salts and minerals. Place the fruit adjacent to it but not on the same tray, and be sure to keep some water in it, it will evaporate.

If it is in a place out of the wind but with morning sunlight you will often get several roosting there in the morning and warming themselves in the sun. Placing it on a post, table or off the ground some way makes for a much easier shooting position.

I plant Dill seeds every year because alot of large butterflies will lay there larva on the dill and they love to eat it, you can watch them go thru the life cycle. It grows about 2 or 3 ft tall so plant it in the back of your flower's. Works great here
