I've got 3...35L, 50L, and 85 1.8.

I use my zooms more than I do my primes, however if I am shooting indoors I often times turn to my primes. Not to mention the nice bokeh you can get with these primes. They are also generally sharper than my zooms, especially stopped down to the equivalent aperture. (35L is sharper at f2.8 than my 16-35L MKII for instance)

I only had zooms until I wanted to take pictures of our newborn grandchild in the hospital. f4.0 just didn't cut it without a flash. Went out and purchased the 50 1.4 and could finally understand why people suggested getting fast primes. Now I have 2 and I'll probably have a few more before I get another zooom

Only two primes here: 24 f/2.8 and 50 f/1.8 - both Canon. I want the 28 f/1.8 something fierce, though a Sigma 30mm would make me happy as well.

I like primes 'cause they make me thing about the composition more. With a zoom a have a nasty habit of just watching the edges and not losing composition outside the frame and then end up with something inside the frame that I think could be better.

I've gotten into the habit, though, of thinking about the shot before looking through the lens and pre-picking a focal length. I typically end up at or near what I picked in my head.

Nifty Fifty -50mm f/1.8
50mm f/1.4
85mm f/1.8
Sigma 70mm Macro f/2.8
100mm Macro f/2.8
60mm Macro EF-S f/2.8

If I had only one it would be the 100mm Macro or the 85mm, both are great portrait lenses...

I have three primes. My Canon 85mm 1.8 (great for portrait work, which is what I do mainly), my nifty 50, and my sigma 105mm 2.8 Macro. All are excellent lenses, although my main beef with the nifty is that it hunts a LOT and needs a bit of coaxing to get it to focus for you. Most of the time I focus manually anyway.

Yeah, but I hate focusing the Nifty since the focus ring is that front ring and my fat fingers sometimes slip and touch the front element...doh!

I use the 24-105 as my walk around and LOVE my 135mm f/2 for indoors. The 85mm f/1.8 is also very good. You can't go wrong with primes. And like people said, your 'zoom' is in your feet.

Yeah, I don't blame you. It really needs some babying to work. It's still a good lens for the money though.
