And like people said, your 'zoom' is in your feet.

That reminds me of "Black Hawk Down". "This is my safety."

because i have a crop body..... i would go with a sigma 30mm 1.4 it is fast. the images are fantastic. the af is great. and its the perfect focal length on a crop.

and i own this lens. and love it.

shannon

Your body is cropped? Since when? Guy goes away from POTN for a few months and Shannon gets her body cropped...LOL;)

I have the 50 1.4 and 85 1.8 and love them. I use them mostly for portraits because they are sharp. My dream lens is the 200 f2. :)

Already got did...LOL 30D and 350D. I'm waiting for Kwanon to fix the 1D3 before making my huge leap!;) But I guess that would still be "cropped", huh...Maybe a new 5D will come with some features that will attract me and can actually focus? :p

The wierdest thing about prime lenses comes from my flickr account.

I got flickr to share photos with some friends and family. Strangers view my account and ask about my Photoshop skills for the most part.

I actually have essentially no Photoshop skills, so I'm not totally sure what the heck these people are seeing that make them think I'm a Photoshop wizard.

For now I'm taking it as a compliment.

My only lens right now is the 50 f/1.4. It's been interesting having just one prime lens as I find photography more enjoyable since it requires me to think a lot more about composition. While zooms are great and I've been fortunate to own the 16-35L, 24-70L, and 70-200L, I'm having more fun with the 50. I've contemplated also buying the 28 or Sigma 30mm but there's something about the 50, even on a 30D.

Kinda like a step back in time to my old-school film days.

Gear: Kodak Brownie and homemade pin-hole cameras. Burlap sack for a bag.

Apart from my UWA zoom, I shoot exclusively with prime lenses. Why? Among other things, speed primarily, price, IQ, and a bunch of other reasons. I just don't like shooting with slow, expensive zooms. The primes I shoot with are the 28 1.8, 50 1.4, 85 1.8 and 200 f/2.8L.

I find a fast prime infinitely more versatile than the ability to zoom. Like airfrog said, primes only, and I never miss the shot because of it. I've never felt the desire for zoom when shooting, but in the past when I used zooms, I wanted more speed all the time. Fast primes were a no-brainer.

Think about it this way too. For the same price, you can get either a 24-105 f/4 IS L, or all of the following: 28 1.8, 50 1.4, 85 1.8.

You make a fine argument for primes...
I'm getting a 10-22 soon, and along with my telezoom I thinking about filling the gap with a few primes. Most of my standard focal length shooting is indoors/low light, and for that a prime always fits the bill. Also, from what I've seen, a huge 2.8 zoom tends to intimidate some people when you're taking pictures of them indoors.

I own several primes, but if I could only have one, it would be the 50mm/2.5 Compact Macro. Macro is one photographic job zooms simply cannot handle to my satisfaction.

I own 7 primes and 7 zooms, each of the kind has a reason to be in the bag.
The primes, of course, because of the light.
They are: 15mm Fisheye F2.8, 24mm F2.8, 50mm F1.8 I, 85mm F1.8, 200mm F1.8 all Canons, a Tokina 100mm F2.8 and a Hartblei 80mm F2.8 T&S.
And they are not so noticeable....

Two bodies left, some "soso" lenses, and still a lot of gear.....

When 'working' I use my 3 primes 80% of the time, the other 20% I'm using the 16-35L for wide. Out and about with the kids etc I generally use the 24-70 or 70-200 if outdoors.
