The 20D was and still is a jaw-dropper for me. Enjoy! :D

My only regret is that Canon did not produce this camera sooner.....

Just got the 20D few hours ago, so didn't have time to try it out. But while at the shop and 1st held it... (don't flame me)... I felt it was more toy(ish) than the rebel. However, while at home reading the manual, I started to notice the difference in build quality. But it's not as a big difference as some people lead you to believe.

Another observation is the fps, boy! that's a mean machine.

Just first impressions.

Well if you guys don't like the lenses, then what do you recomend for the 20D.
This is in terms of a wide angle lense.

Hallo CoolToolGuy,
Could you share some of 17-85 weakness you had found here? I am planning to buy one, so your input would be apprecited.

Thanks

I have the 20D. I think the kit lens is OK for the price and provides a useful walk around lens. But if you have ones that overlap that range, then you don't need it.

I tried one and though the results were soft compared to the 28-135 which I ended up getting. In hindsight, I should have tried another 17-85 lens since it is a better walk aorund lens than the 28-135 (which doesn't go wide enough).

Other than that the 20D is a superlative camera.

Having held a Rebel before, I cannot understand how in the world you would think that a 20D feels like a toy. The Rebel is made of plastic and to me just feels really cheap. Nothing like the solid metal feel of the 20D.
But I guess everybody is entitled to their opinion, I just can't understand it.

I just got my 20D last Thursday and bypassed the kit lens. See my sig for what I got. I plan on getting a filler lens in the future but since I have started with L lenses, It will be difficult not to save for another L -?
The 20D is my first DSLR and so far it is awesome.
Now, if I only had time to go out and shoot.....

Ain't that the truth! I'd own them all, if I could afford to.

I am not a pixel peeper, so I can't really tell you about CA and the like. There has been some discussion about distortion at 17mm. I can't deny or confirm that at this point.

  • I noticed that it is more subject to flare than my 24-70 L, so I replaced the plain filter I had on it with a Hoya Pro1 multi-coated filter.
  • Prior to having the Hoya filter I had a B+W F-PRO UV filter, which is thin, but not 'slim'. When I added a C-POL filter, I got vignetting in the corners. That was the reason I got the Hoya Pro1 - it is the thinnest filter that still has a front thread. I haven't tested with the Pro1 and a C-POL. If I still get vignetting I may try a Pro1 C-POL.
  • I have the hood, and the most important reason to get it is to keep your fingers out of the frame! Without it, you can sometimes get your finger in the shot just by resting it on the filter thread. And, thanks to the viewfinder crop (95%), you can't always see it. With the hood, I'll be sure to keep my fingers behind it.
Hope this helps.

Have Fun,

Rick

I feel exactly the same. While everyone is entitled to their opinion, I too can't understand how the all metal, black, solid 20D feels like a toy compared to the plastic 300D. While the 300D was very nice, the 20D feels like a real camera in comparison.
But everybody is different.

I have now sold my 1D MkII and use the 20d's. They have a few slighty less than "pro" features but not many... Great camera and NO regrets.

In the persuit of total contentment, Canon does not help :)
