Hi all,

Just had my 70-200 2.8 IS delivered and have a question (and yes I have been doing plenty of searchs first ;-)a )

There is the usual IS noise though that is expected and fine though what seems a little odd is this click noise at the end of focusing. About 50% of the time this click sound is happening...

I have a 24-105 L and don't get any such click...

What do you think the issue could be? or is this normal.....?.....

Rgds,
Nick.

When does the click happen? Is it about a second or so after letting go of the shutter? If it is, that is the IS system parking.

So the click sound happens as soon as the focus locks on to a subject though before the full press shutter release goes off... there is the expected IS noise in the time too though my concern is with this click which I can only asume is coming from the USM part of the lens...

Does anyone else get this?

Nick.

Mine definitely does not make a clicking sound when it comes into focus, the only clicking is IS related.

I've been away for a day and now home have played with the different switches and have actually isolated it to the IS... I've read comments that there is a sort of click related to parking the IS. I've been swapping between lenses to compare and don't have the same click on my 24-105.

Do you recon they use different IS systems?

Really apreciate your input here :-) Thanks

Nick.

The 70-200mm f2.8 IS system is a fairly old one - around 4 years, I think. That said, I do not notice any clicks. Probably because I'm too busy getting my shot ;)

I'll check mine out today.

I have 3 IS lenses.

The 300 F4 is the noisiest, then the 70-200 which isn't too bad but you can hear it park. Finally the 24-105 which is pretty silent.

the IS system on the 70-200 is much larger (physically more glass to move) than the 24-105, so when the glass gets locked back in place, you will notice it. I found that the 300 f2.8 doesn't make as much of a noise (no experience with a f4), then again it's a lot more metal between the IS and my ear. If you listen closely, you'll be able to hear the IS working on your 24-105 too, but it'll have to be in a quiet room... The 70-200 can be heard in a busy NYC street.
