Image Stabilization in NON-Canon Lenses?

I'm an IS addict. I'll admit it. But lately, I've been wishing for something better to replace the 28-200 "workhorse" lens that I use, and was hoping for something with IS, which certainly comes in handy at 200mm and better.

The only two Canon lenses that come close are the 28-135 IS (a tad short for me) and the 28-300L IS (too expensive and heavy!).

So, I've been looking to see if any other manufacturers are making "IS-like" lenses. Thus far, I've found only one - the 80-400 OS lens from Tokina. I suspect I may be missing more. Anyone have any info?

sigma has one or two I believe, they are long and are designated by "OS" in the name. I dont think they are cheap but they are cheaper than "L" glass.

To date Sigma has only One "OS" lens.. the 80-400mmEX "OS"

The trouble with this particular lens is twofold

1: It lacks Sigma's excellent "HSM" (hypersonic motor) foucs motor. Ths is a big let down for the otherwise well made 80-400mm lens.

2: The LEns is priced very close to that of the superior Canon 100-400mm L IS... which does includes Canon's "USM" focus motor.

The 100-400mm seems to be superior in pretty much every catagory for only a few $$ more.

If you want "IS" and don't want to spend "L" prices.. there is allways the new Minolta 7D with IS built into the camera

I can honestly say that I have never owned a Minolta or Nikon (I have had Olympus and Pentax SLR’s in the days prior to AutoFocus), and am a self confessed ‘Brandist’

At the time only Canon had a dial for mode, everyone else had push buttons and funny mode cards, I like dials (notice how everyone has now followed what Canon did )

I have to admit I did lust after the first Minolta Maxxum to come out even read the Lantern Guide book cover to cover from the library.

My father always did tell me to aspire to the Hassleblad, with my budget that is all I will be doing with that!

An acquaintance of mine (I must not associate myself as a friend anymore) traded his EOS kit for a D70, because it was cheaper than the Canon equiveilent

Different manufacurers have similar systems, they all have two-letter abbreviations:

IS = Image Stabilizer (Canon)
VR = Vibration Reduction (Nikon)
OS = Optical Stabilizer (Sigma)
AS = Anti Shake (Konica Minolta)

No need to lust after a hassleblad anymore. I have one (a film version) and I fully expect my* 1DsMkII to outperform it
