OK everyone,
(firstly I hope this is the right section...)

in a few weeks I'll be doing my very first paid photo shoot!
I'm going to be shooting the cast of a college opera production.

(as a side note, I have 2 lenses: 50mm 1.8 II and a 28-135mm USM)

I have 3 photographic duties:

1. portraits of the entire cast inside in a studio set up. (use nifty right?)
- I have access to a beginner set of three hot lights
(2 umbrella TOTAs and a halogen spotlight with gels)
- how many lights should I use and what are time tested lighting s
setups?

2. shots of the dress rehersal (use both lenses?)
- will be inside
- I have access to a 430EX
- ceiling tall, bounce flash? or use softbox? (DIY of course... =D)

3. posed publicity shots and posters (use nifty again?)
- will be outside
- use 430 as fill flash?

sorry if this is all very boring, I'm just writing my thoughts so you guys can shoot them to pieces...

anyway, I just thought I would stop trying to learn by osmosis and ask questions of the awesomeness that is POTN!!

alright, thank all!

congrats first off. I'm curious to see how your 50mm works out with a backdrop. I'm trying mine out today on my new homemade backdrop. Good luck and make sure post some pictures when your done.

PS sorry i know i'm not much help but i wanted to track this so i can see if the 50mm is good for portrait
