I own a 30D and a list of lenses etc. My wife accompanies me on almost all my shoots. This is something we do together. She has an eye, I can tell by what she points out to me. I want to pick up a decent P&S for her and see what she captures.

Ok here is the kicker. My wife is disabled and has no use of her right arm. This means she is left handed and has to take shots with her left hand only. Aside from holding the camera at the same time. I've seen her contort herself to do this in the past and it doesn't look easy.

I want something light and rather compact but image quality is paramount to me. I think she might have a hard time with an S series. Of course she states "don't spend a lot of money" I'll ignore that request if it will be easier for her to use and get her decent results.

Any advice is appreciated.

You might find some answers here;

Generally, they recommended using the camera upside down. If that would work, then you might want to look into the Canon TX1, since it is smaller.

Thanks. I know I should quit while I'm ahead, but you might also want to consider the G9, with some options. You can get a cable release adapter for it, and you might be able to adapt a camera L shaped flash bracket to accommodate the remote cable release. I used to have such a set up 30 years ago with my Nikon film camera, so there might be such an animal around today. The G9 can be attached to the L bracket, then turn the camera upside down. The L bracket grip might have to be modified to have the grip indents properly aligned, but it should work.

Here's some are some links for this;

thank you, it definitely gives me some ideas. I like the TX1 as well. We need to go look at whats out there. Size is probably going to be the deciding factor.

While looking at a review of the Canon XT1 on Steve's Digicams website, I came across the mention of the Sanyo Xacti C6. It looks like it might be a better choice for your wife, since Steve's review of this camera says it works well in either the right or left hand.

UPDATE: I just discovered there is now a 7MP version available.

Since size and weight may be a big factor, you might also consider the Canon 870 IS. It's rather small, but if you are inverting the camera, it might be easier to handle. The image quality is very good too, for a camera of this design.

Here is a link with multiple review links;

http://www.digitalcamerareview.com …=832&display=reviewDetail (external link)

This is one of those review links. I supply it because it has a nice Gallery link in the review to get real world comparisons of the camera's images;

http://www.cameralabs.com …70_Ixus_860IS/index.shtml (external link)

If this looks good, you can also look at the newer SD models with more MP and features here;

Hope I'm not confusing you,
Dennis

just at my initial glance the Sanyo may be closer to what she is looking for. I don't mind helping her with things like changing out the card or batteries but she wants to do the operation herself. This is a lot more than she wants to spend so it may turn into a birthday, anniversary present or something.

I like the 870 as well, especially the price. I think the pistol grip style would be easier for her to use though. She surprised me yesterday stating she has an interest in video also. I would never have guessed. The things that keep your marriage alive, after 15 years, she still surprises me once in awhile. :)

Anyway, your not confusing me and I appreciate the research Dennis.

Jerry,

Here are some links with more info on the Sanyo 7MP version.

http://www.sanyodigital.com/product.aspx?v=18 (external link)

http://www.letsgodigital.org/en/16986/sanyo-xacti-hd700/ (external link) (a limited review)

http://gizmodo.com …0p-videocamera-303720.php (external link) (another limited review, with the same info, but more photos)

There do not appear to be any "expert" reviews available. The camera is definitely being presented more as a camcorder than a digital still photo camera. It tries to cover both sides of the market.

Dennis

PS It appears you could find this camcorder/camera at Wolf's in your area.

I refuse to walk into a Wolf Camera, except one. (one of the original stores, a retired photographer works there and usually tells me to go buy somewhere else) They should have it at a bestbuy or circuit city store. I would probably online but I need her to hold it and make sure it is going to work for her.

I'll check out the links. Thanks again.

Sounds like a Wolf in wolf's clothing issue. We don't have the luxury of camera stores here, too small and remote from the big cities. Hope you can find an actual camera for her to hold.

It's not THAT bad. We did have an April Fool's Day blizzard last Tuesday, and got about 26" of new snow. However, most of that has melted from warmer temps (50 - 60), and we had rain last night. However, folks don't normally plant anything in their gardens until June, to avoid a killing frost.

There is really a lot to do up here in any season. It's quite beautiful with all the trees. Lots of mountain bike trails, cross country ski trails,snoeshoeing, snowmobile trails, four-wheeler trails, ski hill in town, etc. We also have a very popular cross country marathon ski race in February, followed by a great dog sled race used by some folks to prep for the Iditarod in Alaska.
