Trip to New York

I'm off for my first "holiday" in about 3 years, and we've booked a great trip to NYC for a few days. Of course with all the stuff we want to see it's not going to be very relaxing but I'm looking forward to it anyway

Anyway, I'm trying to decide what to take with me, and/or whether I need to get anything else. My current gear's in my sig, and the 40D, 10-22 and 24-105 are definitely coming.

As for anything else, I was thinking about a fast prime - maybe the 50 1.4 or 85 1.8. But I'm not sure. Any advice from anyone that's been whether such a thing would be useful? Thanks!

I would have thought that with the 10-22 and the 24-105 you probably have it covered and you'd be travelling relatively light. Depends how much gear you want to be carrying around with you. A fast prime may be good for indoors but then you have the IS on the 24-105 to help you out there.
New York is somewhere I'd love to go with the camera, I'm pretty envious Have a good trip.

Definately take a fast prime. I would take either a Sigma 30mm 1.4 or a Canon 50mm 1.4, tho' if the Sigma 50mm 1.4 is available by the time you go it would be worth considering. otherwise, what you are taking is perfect IMO. A small shoulder bag with a top opening will be good rather than backpack.

Remember if you buy at B&H shop you pay local tax. Even if you don't buy it is worth a visit.

NYC is a great place for a short break and lots to shoot. Get a pocket city guide with good map. Easy enough to find your way around but a map just makes life much easier..

Good point on traveling light. Day-to-day I'll have my Kata shoulder bag which will carry 3 lenses and a camera so really at maximum I can take another lens.

Just had another look at your gear list in your sig and noticed there isn't a fast prime there, so would you be buying one to take with? If so, take the advice of the first couple of replies and buy there, IF you decide you need one once you're out and about and shooting. This way you get to travel light initially AND have the fun of shopping for toys if you feel the need.

I guess the 10-22 +24-105 should cover most of your needs.

Going to the US is a great shopping opportunity at the moment and you should not miss a visit to B&H. You could get what is in your wishlist

I would take and or buy a 135/2 or a similar portrait lens. The ability to snipe interesting portraits, candid or otherwise, can't be beat in NYC.

Other than a longer prime you're set with the 10-22 and 24-105. See, all that hard work and research landed you a nice versatile setup!

VSV, interesting option. I had meant to pick up a 135L (as you can probably see from another of my lens threads) but didn't get the opportunity. Right now I think the 50 1.4 might be the better option but I'll have to give it a bit of thought.

Thanks for the other comment as well - god only knows how many hours I spent totting up the pros and cons of different lenses and I'm really happy with my collection now. I think over the next couple of years I'll get some more primes and just enjoy shooting because that's what it's all about really

Note that B&H and other photo retailers in NYC will be closed for a week or so for Passover starting next Friday afternoon (they are always closed on Saturdays anyway).

Time square at night with the 24L would be sweet!

I just bought that lens myself recently and its low light, hand held performance can not be beat!
