The 17-55 has 2 UD and 2 Aspherical elements, whereas the 24-70 has 1 UD and 2 Aspherical Name is Peter and here is my gear:

The non-L build is really a non-issue, since there is no equivalent L lens out there, and if, say, Canon would produce a 17-40/17-55 f/2.8 IS L lenst it would be way more expensive than the EF-S lens.
