Is this a good deal for a tripod?

It says it is a carbon fiber with a ball for 120 brand new.

I have an Amvona (Dynatran) tripod and really like it. Many others here have them as well. If you look at their auctions on Ebay you might be able to get the one your looking at for cheaper.

It looks like a good deal. The ball head may not be the best but it may be worth it just for the tripod.

Is there one that is a bit taller or is this good enough?

Mine is taller and supports more weight. According to that page this tripod is only 55.5" so 4' 7", which isn't very tall at all. I'm 6'4" and barely have to bend down to see the camera at all. Also the one your looking at only supports 5.5 pounds, which again isn't much at all. Even if you never plan on using a super tele that is heavy it's always a good idea to have more support than you will need.

How tall are you and what equipment do you plan on using with a tripod?

Mine came with a three way head not the pistol type you see there.

I think I paid right around $60 with shipping a couple years back. I kept watching their auctions and kept bidding on them. It took about 5 auctions, finally found one that ended really early in the morning so no one was awake to snipe me.

I am about 5 11 and will be using it with my XTi and my longest lens is in my signature.

Well if your like me and don't like having to bend way over to look through the view finder I would get a tripod that is roughly 68" as that will put the camera right near your eye level.

As for weight support the XTi weighs 18oz and your 75-300 weighs roughly 17oz so that would be 35 oz or a little more than 2 pounds. If it were me I would want at least 8-9 pounds worth of support, just to be on the safe side.

You don't need a ball head you can mount the camera directly to most tripods that have a center column( the highlighted part of this pic http://harrysproshop.c​om/Tripods/panorama/55​5B.jpg). This usually requires an adapter screw. But a head makes life so much easier when trying to move the camera left to right or up and down. Imagine having to move the whole tripod left to take a picture vs turning a screw to loosen the head and rotate in the direction you want.

The center column can swing out to go horizontal making it possible to get right on top of the subject.
