Hello everyone

20D here with canon 18-75 IS and a Tokina 100mm macro..

the camera started doing the funky err 99 issue, first with my tokina 100mm, then my canon lense, got sent in for repair, they replaced the shutter arm and something else, originally they thought it was just the lense, then try claiming it was my tokina lense, but then i sent both my canon lense and body and the problem happened, okay all was great.

5 months later, now i am getting the err99 message yet again, so far only with my tokina lense, so i know Canon wont look at my camera and will blame it on the tokina lense as they tried to do originally..

i do plan on buying a Canon macro lense, but for now, this is a P.I.T.A, because macro is what i love to do, and being in costa rica, i have to wait till i fly to canada in June to get it looked at (bought at henry's - extended warrenty with them) anbd i bought my tokina online from B&M so for me to ship it out from CR and such would cost a small fortune and wehen it comes back get charged more for duty.

So now i am thinking when i am in canada in June, i will just buy a 40D if the err99 issue doesnt exist with it...? but i am going to guess it possibly does?

I havent been motivated to do photography for 3 months now and finally i want to get into taking some great shots and this crap happens, furiates me beyond beleif! sure it could possibly be my Tokina lense, i use it primarily, so i am trying to get this to happen on my Canon lense, but with my Tokina it seems totally random, i can reproduce it on one setting (iso 200 / 3.2fstop / 20) but then other setting it works, but then may randomly not work, so i am more to beleive it is the camera, again, as it was before....

argh! why cant things just work like they should!

error 99 is a general error. it exists in all canon cameras (yes even the 40D) and it can be many many things.

argh!

time to try and find out what the problem is

memory card
batter grip
lense
camera

argh,

i just hate when something messes up, even if it gets fixed, i just dont trust it anymore and want to do away with it because i always get the feeling it will fail me again.

annoying trying to take a great macro shot and in your head wondering "what are the odds this wont work and i get err99"

i have a tendancy of if something eletrical breaks for me, or stops working, i smash it to save me any more hassle....

Yes, it has happened a couple times on my 40D. I haven't had it happen since I updated my firmware, but I think that's just coincidence.

Happened with my 40D within three weeks, with every lens, without a lens, with no CF card etc etc etc. Still waiting for it to come back from Canon. They will have had it for longer than I have!

mmm, scary, my gear got stolen, other things, house broken into, but i was going to buy a 40D but if it happns that fast that stinks as i will buy it in canada but will only be there for 10 days, and wont be back for 3 months.... would hate for it to flake out while in costa rica cause then i have a paper weight for 3 months, but i guess just as many people dont have issues.

People who have had problems are definitely in the minority. I am glad I bought it close to home though rather than shipping it from Hong Kong... I would have been up sh1t creak without a paddle then!

I get err99 on my 10D and 1D II. I've gotten it on the 30D & XTs (that's plural) as well. It just happens. You reboot and forget it until it happens again.

Did you lose Digital Photo Professional (DPP)? Get it here (external link). Cursing at your worse-than-a-map reflector? Check out this vid! (external link)

Try cleaning the contacts on your lens and camera. Sometimes that may be the problem.

It has happened to me a few times with the 40D after not having used the camera for 3-4 weeks (was playing with a new G9). Pressing the lens unlock button and twisting the lens back and forth a few times to rub the contacts clean fixed it.

Welcome to the future. The electronics can help use do things easier or drive use crazy.
