I would like some honest opinions on the Manfrotto 055 MF4 Magfiber Pro Tripod and the 804RC2 head.

I will be using this setup w/my Canon 40D and the heaviest lens that I currently have is my 70-200 L IS. The head is rated at 8.8 lbs. which should due nicely.

This setup is in the ball park as far as what I want to spend on a new tripod. I do not want to go over $500.00 at this time. ;)

Thanks.

Well, I will answer my own question. ;)
I bought the 005MF4 with the 3265 ball head. The two together qualify for a $50 rebate so the package was $403.75 and under my $500 budget. :)
I haven't has a chance to play with it much but, it is a rock solid platform for my 40D with any of my lenses.
The lockup of the ball head is positive and very quick at all angles.
This tripod isn't a Wal-Mart toy, it's the real deal for me.

I have the 055 MF3 which is similar, however, it only has three leg extensions versus the 4 for the model you are looking at.

The MF3 has done wonders with my 70-200 F4L without any collar in the wind at that. I've been doing some pretty long exposures (30s) in bright daylight (with a 3.0 ND filter) and need a stable platform for this.

I considered the MF4 for a short period of time due mainly to the fact that it closes up smaller than the MF3. I decided for added stability over carrying convenience and am glad I did.

If you are going to do some serious work on this tripod, make sure you get people's opinion with gear such as your own, and in conditions that you plan to shoot.

Also, I am using a Cullman ballhead with RRS QR clamps and plates.
