I am newb on this board and have been lurking around for awhile picking up some nice tips from this board, so I thought I would post a couple of my surf shots to give you an example of my style. I am a bit of an effects nut and have been doing a lot of experimenting for the last year for both free surfing and contests. If you care to see more you can check them out here on my site. Great shots man, and nice gallery! Curious as to what lens you use - as I'd imagine theres quite a bit of room between you and the subject!

These are really nice mate. Especially the 1st one, that's a pretty cool effect! The only thing i'd change is the blue tint on the whitewater. ;)

Also... You're gallery is awesome! Not sure if it's Firefox, or my resolution (1280x1024), but the page doesn't fit properly on my screen. ;)

Appreciate the comments.
I use a Sigma 50-500mm on a Canon 30d. Here in Florida the break (when we get one from a passing hurricane) can happen a few hundred yards out and you need a lot of lens sometimes.
The first one is an effect I have been working on for awhile and is a combination between tweaked settings in my camera and some post actions in CS3. Kinda like painting with light. Your right about the blue cast, I will give that a try and see how it makes the difference. The 2nd image was taken during the Jan. Oneill Pro at Sebastian Inlet in the pouring rain as I huddled underneath a easeup that I commendeerd since a vendor bailed on the event. It was one of the few barrels of the event and with everyone scrambling from the rain I think I was the only one who stayed and got the shot other than maybe the big glass magazine shooter by the judges in a dry spot!
The gallery page is supposed to expand to whatever size browser you have but I tweaked some of the code for my logo at the bottom, I will check it and see how it loads on my other machines.

Nice. How does that Sigma 50-500 work for you?

Nice pics Paddleout. I've been using the BIGMA awhile now, mostly for surfing & mini track bikes. Not the fastest lens but the range is what I really needed and the price sure was better than Canon's 500mm. Took this pic early this year, not one of my best. You can view the rest at:

Jaxson5- Most of the earlier shots were with the Canon 90-300mm f4.5-5.6 - way to slow. Usually the only time we get good surf around here is when the weather isn't so good so you need a fast lens. And as it goes, I really can't afford any of Canon's SuperTelephoto "L" lenses. Went to the 50-500 last year and pretty well satified so far but have to push the lens sometimes almost 2 stops to get good results. But I do like the range and that's what I wanted. Will eventually get Canon's 300mm F4 "L" IS this year. Should get real good results then.

I like the 50-500mm and have been using it for over a year now but the only drawbacks are the speed of focus and you have to really take care to protect it from the elements and the lens is wide open for sand, water, etc. I have had to send it back to get the ring mount repaired as it worked loose under the weight of itself to which I have now fabricated a brace from the tripod mount to the base of my battery grip to help solve that in the future.

My friend also had to send his back because the paint chipped and flaked off inside the barrel twist and worked its way in front of the lens. So my advice would be only to buy it new and make sure you fill out the warrenty card!

If I ever get lucky and make money from my surf images other than the occasiaonal sponsor buying an image or groms wanting images of themselves I might be able to justify getting some big canon glass.
