You can get a Photo Pass from any of the WDW photographers. Once you have the photopass, (looks like a credit card) the parks have photographers stationed around all the photo op areas and with the characters. Once you have the photopass you can then just hand the pass to a photographer any where in the Disney Parks and it will add the photo to a web based page. You can view and purchase your photo's at the Disney Parks, or access them via the web. I think they keep it active for 30 or 90 days before they delete it. With the Disney pictures you can also have Disney themed icons and borders added to your photos.

The Photopass pictures were ok, I personally did not purchase any. My photo's came out very nice and I even had a Blurb book printed with my pictures.

What is the photopass card?
I have not heard of it so was curious as to what it is.

Thanks
SeattleJerry

The actual Photopass site is a bit lacking in information.

Take a look at this site: Disney's Photopass Service (external link)

I just came back from disneyland in CA and learned a bit about what to take. I have a 40d with an old kit lens 18-55, tamron 28-75, 70-400f4L, and a 50 1.8. I liked the wider angle but made due once the light got less in the pm hours. I did use the larger lens (70-200) for pics of my kids and family on rides.

The one thing I did forget a few times was my 580exII. I figured I would only need it at night but I was wrong. At the character breakfasts the lighting was horrible and I was forced to use the onboard flash. Since getting a 580 i hate using that little flash.

I used a normal backpack to lug the camera. I did not want to carry my slingshot bag all day and didnt have room in the stroller to carry it either. Also I did not want it to scream "this is a camera bag, please take me".

I saw one guy walking around with a waistpack bag. Seems like it would have worked well and can be turned around on rides.

If I did it again I would carry my flash and use it more. A good flash seems to go along way.

you can also try www.disneyphotopass.com (external link)
the photopass people can spiel to you all about the photopass.
a good flash does go a long way with some photos. there is actually quite a bit of locations where the characters are hiding either indoors or under shade. flash helps.

OK, so the wife has our holiday to WDW booked for next February, and has given me the task of photographing the occasion , no pressure then ....

I have a 400D, 18-55 kit lens, and 55-250IS telephoto lens, and a couple of 2GB Extreme III cards.

Given my current kit list above, what would you recommend i add / change for the trip ? Budget is extremely tight as my beloved has spent it all on the holiday itself

Is there anything you would consider crucial ?

Many thanks,
D

My last trip to disney, I took 2000 shots.

Your kit is tight. You need more cards, and I would shoot in raw.

The thing to remember about disney is that everything is so big, that you can overestimate your zoom needs.

A perfect example of this is the castle. Anything tighter than your 18mm will bring heads and people into your shots. I had my 28-135mm as my walkaround the last time, and cursed myself for not bringing my 17-40mm.

Also, get a good bag. I recommend the toploader series from Lowepro for disney. you can mount lens cases to the side, or with the 75 (which I love) you can put both of your lens and your flash in the one bag. (one mounted, one in the bottom of the case. It even includes the chest harness, which can make it handy (but you might look at the padded one.) I cannot overemphasize the importance of the right bag. If you dont have it, you will be miserable.

I'm a broke **** from northeast USA. I too won't be going back for awhile, if ever. I too hit Kennedy and the Animal Kingdom. I took my entire kit, suffered for it, and my pictures haven't been used beyond 4x6s snapshot prints and some online sharing.

Reality.

HAHA this is soooo true.

Disney is literally in my backyard. You will not need a tele lens.

a wide lens is very useful

A 28-135 would be ideal for you since a 24-105 L is out of budget

I never saw a 24-70 mentioned. I know the ops said he was on a budget but would this be a good walk around lens if you only took one lens?

The 24-70 would be a fantastic lens.

That's a great start. The only other suggestions would be maybe either a flash and/or a fast prime (budget friendly nifty works). Also pack one of those cheap rain ponchos that crushes down to nothing in size and stash that in the bag. They charge upwards of seven bucks for one in the 'World. Extra batteries for everything. And cleaning supplies, just in case (blower, brush, tissue and solution).

Leave room for the souvenir half-yard glass from the Rose and Crown at Epcot. ;)

One more tip concerning the Photopass.

If you go to special dining where the kids meet disney characters, they usually try to sell you pictures of your kids posing with Snow White or whoever. This will cost around $30 and you won't get the jpg's.

If you are going to buy the photopass cd anyway, then you can get all your dining photos added to the cd for no extra charge. Just go to the photopass station and tell them when and where you had pictures.

The 24-70mm is all you really need, plus a fast prime for night. Telephotos definitely aren't too necessary except for AK.

I'm getting ready to go to Disney in a few weeks for work (conference)..

Going to take my XTi, with my nifty-fifty, a 28-70 and a 80-210...

I'd love an external flash, but right now I'm in "save all of my money" mode.

You won't need the zoom unless you planning on shooting candids or the animals. If you were looking to leave something behind, that would be it.
