This is what I use 99.5% of the time now, macro excluded :

17-55
100-400

Sure there's a gap between 55-100, but it's nothing a little foot zoom can't fix if needed. Haven't found a situation where it was a problem.

You may add the Canon 10-22 or Sigma 10-20 for more width. I have the 10-22, but if I had my time again would go the Sigma for economy since I don't use it that much.

I do have the Canon 100 macro, but again if I had my time again I'd go the Sigma 105.

And I do also have the 70-200 2.8L IS. But find I can do without it and haven't needed it since I got the 100-400. I don't shoot much low light stuff.

If I was starting again from scratch, I'd get a crop camera and just the 17-55 and 100-400, then build up from there when I knew what I wanted.

I dunno Im pretty happy with what I already have. Of course Im lacking in the long end of things, I think that I would upgrade my daily used lens before getting something longer.

Im just gonna start with
24-70 2.8 (especially if an IS model is more than a rumor)
70-200 2.8IS (Maybe even the F4 IS to start)

I know that its not a lens, but a 430EX II or 580EX II is pretty high on my list as I would love to learn flash. Might make me enjoy taking pictures of people a bit more, among other things.

I dont see myself splurging on 2-3 lenses a year unless I get my other half into photography, 1 a year tops is about what Id be able to do with all my other hobbys.

Yeah, I see so many gaps in your lens lineup. I don't know how you cope... :)

I'm pretty happy with what I have as well. I may pick up the 45 2.8 TS-E to complete the trio since I have the other two already, but most of my lenses pretty well satisfy my needs. The only way I'd really feel I needed or wanted new lenses right now I think would depend on if I started shooting another type of photography more but at the moment, I wouldn't feel I could do any better by spending more money on lenses or anything. My choices have all been guided by what I need, not so much what I can afford.

I have no idea what you mean by "medium" budget....... but I'd guess that discounts any "L" lens.

For me it meant the Sigma 17-70mm Macro and the EF 70-300mm IS USM. Additional lenses I'd like to pad this in specific areas would be the EF 50mm 1.4f, and either the EF-S 60mm or EF 100 Macro.

I can imagine at some stage i might move to full frame - especially if it gets any cheaper in the future - and then I wouldn't want too much crop only glass. (although my crop set-up would go to my daughter)

Tokina 12-24
Canon 24-105
Canon 100-400

Hey! That mirrors my list! :D OK, so I have a 24-70 as well, but I think that's reasonable. What would I like to add to my list? Two from my past: 7-2/4IS and Sigma 150 macro. That would round things out perfectly.

I like my kit....since I got the 35L I haven't really used any other lens except the 135 L a couple times....

I have:

35L
24-70L
135L
70-200 2.8L

The 24-70 may be on it's way out to get a 85L....

This is a godsend if i had to start all over! No pun intended. I actually have an excel matrix somewhere that broke down the cost for this set versus the 17-55, 10-22 route and then upgrading (if you want to call it that), if I knew then what i knew now, I would have definitely have saved some money...and these are L glass lenses.

Done, done and done!
