i wish most of my shots were as sharp as the first :( gotta work on my focus

The first shot was taken with my camera in landscape using center focus point and the result was great...the others were with camera in portrait with left focus point active to try and have the camera focus on faces...didnt work out well is that common practice or is center more proven?

#1 is sharp but I like #3 more. #4, I would crop from left and right.

In the last (from 2nd series) I would crop more from the right. Shooting from lower position will help with bg. But overall these are nice shots.

i needa narrow down my focus issues im not sure if im misfocusing or if its possibly a camera or lens error...hard to tell when i havent done any duck shots or anything with my brand new lens to test out sharpness lol.

as far as a lower position thats really not possible...i shot these sitting on my foot the only lower i could get would be laying down...ill try to figure something out there ty for the feedback

I'm not totally sure if this is right or not, but I don't think I would use portrait mode for action shots, I thought that made the image a little softer. I myself tried some soccer shots for the first time this weekend and kept it on shutter priority (Tv). I only had the maligned 75-300 usm lens to use, but they came out okay, waiting to get the 70-200 myself. If you want more automatic use, they have a sports setting too on the camera. Have fun!

Nice full framed action shots but some of them seem a little on the soft side :(

Vlad...are you hand holding or are you using a monopod? If you don't have one perhaps try one as it may give you a bit more stability. I shoot a lot of hockey and always shoot in landscape mode with my 40D and then crop if I want to do a "portrait" style shot. There are enough MPs to do this. Also I use AI Servo Mode for Auto Focus and often use center point, but have also used the auto setting (where it uses all points) with success.

Landscape or portrait mode should not matter as far as sharpness is concerned. You guys got all cross type sensors in 40d, isn't it?

No - it's that stupid diamond on the 40D.

I like the shots. The look unprocessed to me, so they look fine. Any softness or pop missing can be easily added to these images. Great age group to shoot... congrats on it. Lot's of fun.
