Is this normal? I recently bought a 40D and it is working great--except that occasionally, it will not take the shot, but a make a sound and I have to keep pressing until the shot is taken.

Am I doing something wrong or is the camera?

It does this both in creative and manual.

Thanks!

Sounds like it can't achieve focus lock, if it still beeps in manual that is.

Check AF points, try it on a faster lens, do it in the middle of the day, and if it still happens then I dunno.

Anyone know anything anywhere anymore?

YES grimey-- that is exactly what my camera does!! Is this a malfunction? I am starting to wonder if I should take in to the dealer... I just don't want this to get worse as the weeks pass...

I got the same situation. I realized that for me, for the most part, it's because AF in very low light condition (with slow lens).

When I was taking shots in the house, I figured it was the lowlighting-- but then when we went outside, it was doing it as well. Grant it, it was overcast but still daylight. Very frustrating because I missed a few good shots of the kidos.

In single shot or AI Servo, or AI Focus? SS and AI-F require lock to fire, AI-S doesn't. But, you said you had lock right? The sound your hearing is probably the IS on your lens, right? Do you hear/see the AF lock?

Mine has always fired, but I'm nearly always in AI-Servo, so not really a good example. No issues the few times I've used SingleShot. I avoid AI-Focus because I don't like the camera guessing what I'm trying to do.

Doesn't sound normal. Maybe others who use SS more often will chime-in, so you can confirm if its a design flaw or specific to your camera. If it doesn't do it regularly it'll be tough for Canon to diagnose.

That sounds exactly like you have the self-timer turned on. See page 82 of the 40D manual.

Chill.. :), I got the same problem too, but I was thinking it's because I was doing something incorrectly, good to know that it's not just my problem.

That's one of the reasons why I exclusively use AI Servo. The only time I use One Shot is if I have my 580EX on and am using the AF assist beam in which case focus lock is not a problem.
