canon beach at low tide is very interesting - you have great rock formation plus you get to see all sorts of purple and orange starfish - green anmonee- they have a group of people who patrol the low tide and give information - kids enjoy the tidal pools

Probably the defining shot of Newport is the bridge.

For family stuff, Newport has the Aquarium. I've been once a few years ago, and would like to go back.

Check out the main Newport page: http://discovernewport.com/ (external link)

Maybe an hour south is Florence and the sand dunes. I was just in Florence a week ago and had a terrific time. Nice places for photographs. We went to Haceta Head Lighthouse, the beach, and up the coast a ways to Cape Defiance. I have been to the Sand Dunes in the past.

I highly recommend Florence for family stuff. You can take buggies into the dunes, or take a ride in a giant dune buggy. The Haceta Head lighthouse contains a nice beach area, a short hike to the lighthouse and a tour of the lighthouse. It's $3 to park. The photo opps are plenty here. From the beach, to the lighthouse, to the expansive ocean view mixed in with the nice surrounding cliffs, birds and rocks.

Cape Defiance lets you walk down to the rocks. And there are some blowholes where the water will spurt out high. More great photo opportunities.

Keep your eyes out for migrating whales. We saw a bunch spouting, but they are WAY off in the distance. At least 1/2 mile off the coast. Sometimes, you may see one up close, but we did not. Check out the Whale Spoken Here (external link) website for more information on whale watching. Not sure what it will be like during Summer. There may be some stragglers still making it up the coast.

Nearby all of this are also the Sea Lion Caves. I have not been there but the rest of my family has and they enjoyed it.

There are scenic stops all along Highway 1 and the ever changing Oregon Coast make each stop special and unique.

If you do decide to head to Florence, there is a terrific hidden gem called Sweet Creek Falls. A favorite of hikers and photographers, but little known outside of this. An internet search will provide many links on how to get there. It's east (inland) of Florence, so will take you further away from Newport.

Keep in mind, the coast can get foggy over summer.

Not to pull you away from the coast, but 1.5-2 hours away is McMinnville and home to a wonderful air and space museum. Although it may or may not be interesting to your daughter. I was just there in January and had a terrific time. It is home to the Spruce Goose...and...wow!!!! No photo can do it justice. Just be sure to bring along your widest lens. There are nice IMAX movies. Even the architecture provides for some good photos.

How many days are you going to spend?

If you head north from Newport just a few miles, you'll run into Depoe Bay. A must stop. It claims to have the smallest harbor in the US or world (can't remember which). Very picturesque place.
Not necessarily photo related, but in Newport (and also Lincoln City about 30 minutes north) you need to check out Mo's and have their clam chowder. Some of the best I've ever had.

BTW - my avatar was shot in Depoe Bay :-)

Looks like you'd better shoot for this weekend. Weather looks half way decent. Not so for next weekend if you can believe the forecast.
Nice as that sounds, I'm heading to Tucson for several weeks. I know what that weather will be like :-)
