I just got a used sony camcorder from a fellow potn member (ericandsusan) and started to play around with it today after getting a pack of memorex dvd r+rw. I recorded a few stupid things just to get used to it and such. Now im trying to get it uploaded from the disc to the computer. I cannot for the life of me figure it out. How can I just get it saved into a new file so I can upload it lets say to youtube.com? I can view and watch what i recorded thru windows media player and it has seperate chapters for everythign i recorded. If and when i get it saved, will those show up as individual folders or will I need some sort of video editing program to seperate everything? The camera didn't come with the cd/manual that would come if it was new.
And that brings me to my last question, are there anykind of photoshop plugins to do video editing? I am almost certain i had something, but i think my sister took it upon herself to erase things thinking it would speed up the computer when she's logged in.

To place the files onto your hard drive select them all and drag them to a folder of your choice.

You can then use a program like Auto Gordian Knot (external link) to convert to AVI this would be handy for uploads to Youtube etc.

If you only want a certain part of the file you could split it (after conversion to AVI) into any size you want using Virtualdub (external link)

These two programs are free to use and probably better than most you'll pay for. There are loads of apps that cover DVD/DV conversion, maybe you could try out some trials and see what one suits you if Virtualdub & Auto Gordian Knot don't do the trick.

Another package worth considering would be Adobe Premiere Elements.

Suprisingly powerful really considering it can be found for as little as $79 USD in some of the "Shopping Club" stores.

FWIW, I've edited pieces on full up Adobe Premiere (a few versions back) that were used on broadcast television...

It would only be AVI after being converted. You probably have DV files just now?

alright iv'e tried seveal times and i keep getting the same error message "can't find file type" for where it wants to save the .avi file. I had to initially install a new version of windows media player. But this is driving me nuts. I didn't think it would be this hard to upload a movie from the disk to the computer.

oh, im using that auto gordian program to do the conversion.

I told you if all you want to do is upload the video just copy all files to a location of your choice.

Auto Gordian Knot needs an IFO file to convert to AVI.

I'm not too good with new video cameras but do you have a file like VIDE_TS.IFO or is it all .VOB's?

i did copy to a new file. and i have both those files you listed. there is some sort of file missing in the computer that my sister deleted. i keep getting "cannot perform or it doesn't work cause .dlll something file is missing".

im just going to install the software onto my laptop which I know wont cause me problems.
