I ran across different posts that refer to the Sigma 50-500. From what I read, it seems to be a great lens for the money. However, I don't know how to figure out what you are getting. I have figured out Canons codes pretty much e.g. IS= image stabilization, L= more money (lol), usm= ultra sonic motor. But, I haven't been able to figure out what is image stabilization on the Sigma. Is there a good place to look at the designations?

Thanks,

David

Sigma's website stands to be a good chance.

Don't let that common sense thing bother you though. It can be lacking occasionally here. Just look at the thread in my sig. :p

Hi David,

The Sigma 50-500 doesn't have image stabilisation. Here's some reviews you might be interested in:

Ironically, the last of these was removed by the photozone author who claimed the test sample was sub-standard.

Cheers

David, within the next few weeks Sigma is supposed to begin marketing two new lenses, a 150-500 f/5-6.3 and a 120-400 f/4.5-5.8. Both will have OS, Sigma's version of IS, and HSM, Sigma's USM. Many people are anxiously waiting for reviews and hoping they will be even better than the Bigma (shorter zoom range can make better optical quality easier to design.) They will apparently sell in the U.S. for under $1,000 and under $850. Not only will they be very attractive in themselves, but also many used Bigma and Sigma 80-400 OS lenses may soon be available at bargain prices.

One more thing, the 50-500 has a very tight rotating zoom that kills your hand after a day of shooting. I assume you would eventually get used to it but I haven't.

The rings usually ease up with use. I have had the same with each of my longer Sigma lenses. You're also pushing quite a bit of glass there ;-)a
