I thought I would try a new title to stir up some interest.

I am trying to turn on a feature while in Manual mode that will give me a light reading for the shot I am about to take. It looks like a number line going from -2 to 2 to indicate if the shot will be under or over exposed. I found a feature for Exposure Compensation, but I don't think that is it.

In manual, you use aperture and/or shutter speed. Exposure Comp would be used in Tv or Av. Hit the display button until you see the meter (the -2--0--2) and histogram.

Okay, mlav. I'm home now with the camera, but I am still not seeing the number line. I do have the histogram though. I have hit the display many times, but the meter never came up. Can you think of some little something I'm not doing?

Do you have the owner's manual? The Canon site probably has it on their site as a PDF.

Advanced manual - Page 62 - It looks like the visual metering is somewhat limited on the camera. Not sure if they give you the standard visual -2--0--2, it just tells you if you are -2 or +2 stops from what the camera thinks is good exposure. A four stop range! Thats crazy. The histogram might be the only way to go, which means you are stuck using the LCD.

Check page 19 and 20, check your display settings on the camera. I don't see a meter display on page 22.

I find that if I depress the button halfway in M mode that a little number appears on the upper most left corner. This number is between -2 and 2 (like -1 1/3) so I think this is the exposure value. If I change the f-stop, SS or ISO, this number changes appropriately.

Thanks for trying so hard to find the info for me. I really appreciate it.

Yep, that is correct according to the manual. So you use the histogram to get you close to the desired exposure, and then press half way to get the meter to give you that value. Kind of strange how they set that up.
