Ive seen tests even with the best filters having an impact (albeit so small its doesn't really matter) and cheaper ones having quite an impact.

Hence the ongoing debate - re to have or not to have filters on the front element. ..

Based on my experience, the cheaper the UV or Skylight filters the more 'distortion' one gets. On the other hand, spending some $150+ on the filters can place a huge dent in the pocket... but IMO well worth the protection. I have super multi-coated Heliopan & Hoya filters on mine... and they seem to be fine...

I guess that the best thing to do is remove the filters if you know you are not going to be in a 'tricky' situation, e.g., shooting outdoors in dusty conditions, or if there is a likelihood of sea spray...

Studio shooting should most likely be a safe time to remove the filters... unless of course one is shooting wet scenes:p

I just cant bare the thought of a $3300 lens with no protection on the front :|

Then again at this time most of my imagery is shot for screen/web so is being reduced alot and therefore any quality loss due to a budgo filter is definately being lessened by jpegging etc.

I reckon it's like lenses ... you either get good copies or you don't - I've got a whole pile of marumis and they never leave the camera (A75) - makes no difference on or off. Also ran tests with Chris's 17-85 - on was fractionally softer than on - but not so you'd notice. (ie nothing that couldn't be buffed out with a touch more USM in ps).

Cheers, Shane.

No thanks :) i don't think I'd ever buy a lens worth that unless it was paying for itself ... or was an amazing 1/2 price deal. I have a plan to make my camera equipment pay for itself, or at least have VERY little loss. So far I have been successful by managing to grab most of my lenses for great deals that I know I will get my money back on. Although I am struggling to find a decent deal on a 24 - 70 :|

The front element IS the filter and is designed to be removable and therefore replaceable in the event of damage.

Getting better, have 4 hours left and then 4 days off :) Hopeing to get out a couple of times with the camera myself in the next 3 - 4 days. Although 1 day will be dedicated to doing the bookwork of my design business, every year its an issue as all i do during the year is fire all my invoices, receipts and other paperwork in a drawer and sort it all out one day a year, lol always have a splitting headache at the end of it :| think i'll do it Tuesday. Hopefully get a few $$ back off the taxman this year, might be a nice change :)

I got a letter from the IRD last week, saying to pay them $1800 immediately. I thought about it for a couple of days then went and purchased a camera. They can wait.

Ive done that (was over 90 dollars, so I thought id do it for a laugh) and eventually they just take it out of your pay weekly. However it took over 9 letters, and 3-4 months before this occurred.

So you have time, and at least 3-4 letters of the same thing to come yet :P
