It's just like last years "First ever traversal of the Northwest Passage".

Well apart from Roald Amundsen in 1905 and about 100 other documented times since then of course.

I know my eyesight is much improved since the surgery, but I'm pretty sure I can see white icey-stuff on top of the water there in that photo from 1987... maybe I don't have the technical terms down right, but I think that's what you call frozen water.

In 2000, an area of seawater about a mile wide opened at the north pole over summer - certainly not all the ice melted.

So in fact, this year is likely to be the first year in recorded history that there has been no ice at the north pole. Exciting. But don't worry too much, it's only a 50/50 chance.

I wonder if we can get some good shots this weekend, Port Waikato?

Hmm, looks like I'm going to be up in Auckland for a weekend at the end of August (29th I think) - not sure what we're doing, but looks like I'll have the Saturday to kick around by myself.

Pity it doesn't coincide with the Coromandel trip, but any interest in doing something else?
