whoo thats not a very flattering shot...

Not every shot is intended to be 'flattering.'

Is that all you're looking for?

I defy anyone to look at that photo and not make eye contact with the subject. There is interest in the image that goes well beyond whether it is flattering or not.

I'm not short. I'm concentrated awesome!

Correctness. ;)

Though in this case I think it's more of a case of the fact that Kirst is actually quite the wee cutey, and that shot makes her look like a hoodrat axe murderer. :p

Cheers, Dave.

ok i rephrase --- that shot does not show or perceive Kirst in the light we all know her as.. this shot gives me the impression of a tired, run down and washed out woman - where as we all know Kirst as a energetic beautiful young lady.

These look like two different people ..... hence why i said its not flattering. And your right there are other points of interest - but due to the fact we know the subject well - our main point of interest is drawn to the fact that in the one photo Kirst does not seem to be 100% - where as in this photo (clicky) our Kirst does look very good.

If this shot had been of a random stranger who we did not know then yep it would be case of looking onto the soul through her eyes to see what is there or is troubling her. I also like the back lighting and do find the lighting on the face a little flat , but that adds to the mood so is well executed.
(my only real gripe is the blue trim - it draws the eye away from the models face)

At no point did i say it was uninteresting a as photo and indeed eye contact is made when you look at it.

Ive heard people also comment its learning how the servo works, and once they learned to use it properly it worked much better, but acted differently. I have not experienced any of this but I have read this comment a couple of times from others.

There is a known issue. I believe the response Chris got when he contacted Canon was "Oh, one of those ones?" (correct me if I am wrong Chris).

Another guy I shoot with (who has a lot of experience) swears black and blue his 40D has tracking issues in servo mode. Then again, so does my 20D.

I'm not so convinced that its actually a 'problem' but more likely a 'limitation'.

The guy I mentioned above is considering getting rid of his 40D as it frustrates him (even as a backup body to his MKIII).

Most users will never experience the issues, but due to the nature of the stuff Chris, myself and others shoot (sports with fast moving objects) some will.

Interesting.

Cliff

Kirst - this from another thread ;

One of our participants in the long comment thread below (Tom) got this in a message from Canon USA. It may help some of you isolate the problem before you post a comment/question.
To isolate the cause of the issue, we suggest that you do the following:
1. Turn off the camera.
2. Remove the lens, battery, and CF card.
3. Allow the camera to sit without power for approximately 20 minutes.
4. Insert a fully charged battery, and turn on the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.
Does the “ERR 99″ message appear? If it does, then the camera should be
serviced. If it does not, then please proceed to the next set of steps:
1. Turn off the camera.
2. Insert the CF card.
3. Turn on the camera.
4. Format the CF card in the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.
Does the “ERR 99″ message appear? If so, then the CF card is the most
likely source of the issue. Try using a different card.
If the message does not appear, please complete the following steps:
1. Turn off the camera.
2. Clean the lens contacts by gently rubbing them with a pencil eraser
or soft cloth. Be careful that you do not let any debris fall into the
camera body.
3. Reattach your lens.
4. Turn on the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.
If the “ERR 99″ message only appears when one particular lens is
attached, then that lens should be examined by a service technician.
If you see the “ERR 99″ with a different Canon lens attached, then the
camera should be serviced.

Good luck with your camera.

Cheers, Shane.
