Hey all, this is my first post but I've been lurking a while as I'm debating between a few different DSLRs that I like.

I'm fairly certain I want the Canon 40D, and am now in the process of shopping around for the best deal :)

My husband suggested taking a peek at EBay, and I did - there seems to be a lot of these ebay stores that sell big package 'deals' for what seems to be prices that are too good to be true.

Anyone have any feedback on these? The ebay feedback looks mostly good on some of them, but something about getting a 40D and like 5 lenses plus a bunch of other accessories screams "scam" to me.

Thanks for the feedback, and I apologize if this is in the wrong forum, I just couldn't quite figure out where to ask. :o

Skip eBay for new camera gear. They aren't the best deals. It's mostly over-valued junk that they include.

Stick with the good spots.

www.beachcamera.com (external link) (same as buydig, but sometimes with better prices or vice versa)

etc etc etc.

Most of the packages are not from US. Which probably means no USA warranty, You'll only get a store warranty, if that.

I'd stay away from them as I don't like saving a few bucks and in return get a grey market body.

Thanks :)
Also, I'm in Ontario so I have to keep in mind cross-border issues when I'm ordering from the US. But it seems that's where the best prices are.

I think I may stick to buying from 'real' retailers - sure, I'll have to buy things piece by piece but that's probably better anyway.

Most of the time, those packages contain pieces that are crap and you'd never wanna buy separately anyway.

I have bought lenses and accessories from ebay and other web sellers - with no complaints.

However, even though I bought a cheapish P&S from Amazon, I'd never even consider buying a camera such as the 40D from anywhere but my local retailer. Why? Simple - after spending a considerable sum of money, in the event of something going wrong with the camera (and things do go wrong!) it's so much easier to pop it back to the shop and discuss the problem face to face with a real human being!!

many of these guys are legit but like CDI says they are selling packages of less than desirable equipment.

but some like cameta camera are also brick and mortar and have excellent deals on ebay.

of course a nod is as good as a wink to ablind horse :D.

buy you camera with a kit lens and start from there..........

OP check out www.photoprice.ca (external link)

It will allow you to compare prices and will automatically calculate taxes, as well as, exchange rate. Hope this helps.

I think as long as you are sure of what you want, and you come to forums like this - to get educated on the equipment...

...then ebay is a good place to buy stuff.

you can find some nice deals there.

Am I allowed to post EBay links on this forum? It'd be nice to get feedback as to whether a 'deal' is really a deal or if it's a bunch of crap I won't want anyway haha.

I'm JUST starting, and just want what I need to get back taking pictures again, and I'll work on getting the more expensive lenses later. So I'll probably just get the 40D with a kit lens and build up my collection as I go along, I guess.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone - especially the one for photoprice.ca - that's going to be a useful site - thanks :)

I do have a question in regards of lenses, I have 40D with the 28-135, I went to every single one of the sites posted above and notice that there are some nice lenses very cheap, I know this not the way to go but I am on a very and when I say very, it is a very low budget; now if I get those 170 to 270 bucks lenses for now i may get better (then the only lens I have) pictures.

Here is the question; which of those cheap lenses I can buy that will give me a good quality pic? I know it will not be as good as the L or even the gold and silver bands from canon but I need additional lenses other than the 28-135mm.

Thanks

I too am looking to get a 40d real soon...where are you in Northern Ontario?

So far I've seen Aden camera with the best price for a 40D after a $100 rebate. Shipping shouldn't be too much depending where you are.

I check photoprice daily and Aden Camera usually has the best price.
