I'm a relatively new to photography. My friend says he spent grands on a vintage Leica camera.

I suppose Leica is supposed to be a cream of the crop brand? I never heard them making digital cameras so I assume it's for film only?

Someone wanna tell me more about Leica cameras- how expensive are they (and what models they range in + price), and how good is their actual image quality?

Do I never hear them because this is a Canon forum? If they're so good how come I never hear or see anyone using it Do they still make cameras today?

primary market is range finders.

So why don't more ppl use Leica? To me it seems ppl just use Canon or Nikon. Maybe because they lack a good entry-level models?

But then I don't see many Leica on high end levels... pros still use high-end Canon or Nikon.

You hit the nail on the head, they use to be very popular with war photographers as they are quite literally bullet proof, I have seen a picture of one with a bullet hole through it. These days digital is just easier and preferred by newspapers etc. Leica don't really have anything that compares to the digital hasselblads and canon's.

Tell me about Leica cameras. (i know nothing)

The first thing you should know, is they have nothing to do with the EOS system, and thus the question should not be posted in that forum :)

For what you get from a spec perspective, they are .. a little.. "pricey".
There market share is limited, a niche, they "appeal to a select audience" to quote a favorite movie.
... . Awesome equipment, no question. If you can afford the best..

It's like asking why don't more people drive Rolls Royce.
No question the Rolls is better built than the VW bug, but the Bug is excellent too an clearly people buy a lot more of those.

Leica film cameras are built to last a century but at the same time are a prestige camera IMO They have a definite club atmosphere to them. If you summer in the Hamptons you simply must own a Leica darling. Is that a jar of Grey Poupon? :)

And you MUST use it only to take moody, grainy B&W photos of elderly and homeless people in urban settings...

there's digital Leica M8, which IMO doesn't count as a "real" leica and the pictures are worse than from canon.

Their wide angle lenses are awesome

They don't have mirrors, so the wide angles are cheaper to design

If you buy new, every little scratch on a leica body costs you 100 bucks

If you buy a user, you don't buy it, you borrow it. You sell it for as much as you bought it in the first place.

There's too much myth and mystique around the cameras. They break, the repairs are costly and at a minimum of 300-500 bucks.

They are very easy to focus in low light even with wide lenses.

If you want a leica experience, buy yourself a FED2 with a lens from Ukraine. They go for 20 bucks plus 20 bucks shipping.

There's two mounts - threadmount M39/LTM and leica M which is a bayonet mount.

The leica M bayonet is the later leica mount and the patents for it expired in the late 90s.

When patents expired, cosina/voightlander started making "bessa" rangefinders and a whole range of cool modern lenses, which are better than L line and cheaper too:

All full frame, sharp and with zero distortion, but heavy vigentting
12mm heliar f/5.6 for 500 bucks
15mm f/4.5 heliar for 300 bucks
28mm f/1.9 ultron
35/1.2 nokton for 700 bucks

There's also a zeiss rangefinder made in japan, goes for a grand which offers a awesome rangefinder.

A lot of the shooters who actually used both leica systems and bessas agree that the new voightlander glass is as good or better than leica.

Leica has a reputation for making some of the best glass in the world (at the time at least). Personally, if I had money to burn I'll get a Leica M8. Then again if I had that kind of money to burn I would much rather get a Canon 1D Mark III. Now if I was really rich I would get a Canon 1D Mark III, Nikon D3, Leica M8, and a Hasselblad H3DII. A guy can dream...
