I haven't used either, but I believe the important difference is RC-1 allows for the bulb shutter function and RC-5 does not.

i heard that the rc-5 can be used anywhere in terms of point of reference to the camera, and that rc-1 can only be used w/ in the line of sight of the camera's frontside. is this correct? TIA

I'm quite certain that both require you to be (relatively) in front of the camera.

My RC-5 does activate the camera in bulb mode. You have to be in front of the camera ( up 25 ft away and no more than approx 80% of center L or R) for it to operate.

Why not try the wired remote ? Or the "do-it-yourself" wired remote?

Agreed. Aparently the handsfree jobbies for cell phones work quite will but they are tethered. I have an rc-1, which I almost never use, and an rs-60e or something. It is a plugin remote that I find quite handy because I can activate the shutter without reaching around to the front of the camera.

Both were given to me when equipment purchases. I can see both having there place, but the 60e gets used more by me.

Ok, I have the RC-1 and I have used it for about 6 months and I am a huge fan. I have not used the RC-5, but I have used wired options before and I find the remote to be better.

You do need to use it from line-of-sight to the sensor on the front, but for me this is much more convenient than having a long wired device and having to find it and plug it in and all that. With the RC-1, you attach the small remote to the strap of your camera and so it's always very easy to find.

I use mine for astrophotography, some macro work, and some portraiture. The non-wired aspect comes in really handy when I am somewhere with friends, hiking or traveling, and I want to take a picture where I'm actually in the picture. The remote has two modes - one in which it takes a shot immediately, one in which it has a 2-second delay and then takes a shot. Any questions?

This is basically the only reason why I keep my rc-1 around, the rs 60 is much better for tripod work.
