I added a Mark III to my kit -- here are a few pics from the first week of minor league baseball in Florida. All were shot with the MKIII and Canon 300mm f/2.8 without a TC. EXIF data is embedded but I've also posted ISO, shutter speed and aperture.

Wow... those ISO 2000 images make me sick.... I can't believe how nice they are!

Any noise reduction done on these?

Great shots might I add!!!

Yes, I used noise reduction software -- Noise Ninja to be specific. I've just made it a part of my work flow whether I think images need it or not.

The whites seem a bit blown out, atleast on my monitor

Nice sharp photos though!

Look at that ISO 6400 shot, WOW! There's nothing wrong with the focus on your Mark III Jerry. Did you get the 400 back yet?

As for the whites, they're fine. He went for the exposure on the face, which is most important here. Sometimes you have to sacrifice the highlights to get the face exposure correct.

Chris T -- Haven't you heard the MKIII has an AF issue ;) ? I'm liking the MKIII OK but I think Canon's next 1D upgrade will probably make it obsolete. If my MKII hadn't been in the shop on opening day I would have waited for that upgrade.

royv - Some highlights are definitely blown -- it's a trade off. I opt to minimize cap shadows and I've found the easiest way to do that it to blow highlights.

Chris P -- The 400 and MkII are both still in the shop -- and I'm still crying.

Would the Highlight Tone Priority help? Just a wee-bit hot on one maybe last! My monitor?

The small amount of blown highlights don't bug me one bit... I didn't even notice the first shot was ISO 6400!!! Crazy...

300mm f/2.8 is pretty cool. I wonder if it is better than 400mm f/2.8 sharpness wise...

I think it depends on the focal distance. Beyond 100 feet or so, my money says the 400 is sharper. Inside 100 feet it's probably a toss up.

Jerry, nice shots. I have been looking to upgrade to the MKIII, looking at your high ISO makes me want one now. I will be shooting the Devil Rays this year and as you know lighting is terrible in that stadium. Have you had any of the focus issues? I ran across a friend shooting one at Bay Hill and he was having some issues with a brand new one. are you going to be at Disney for the Devil Rays.

Jerry - can't you just create a custom light curve so that you don't clip the highlights while still boosting the mid-range? Everyones eyes are different, I am one of those where the blown highlights really show up... but I think I see it more then most. Digital really has changed what is the standard look .... perhaps I am just too old and too old school. Give me a little grain/noise.... I love the old photo feel.

PS - drove through your home town last week..... at least I know where your at now. I did 1800 miles of I95 without one traffic backup... the gods must have been shinning on me.
