I'm pulling the trigger on this lens next week. Problem is, while the gun will be fully loaded then, there appear to be no targets to shoot at.

All the online retailers I'm used to dealing with are out of stock. I'd buy used but no one seems to have a used one to part with, either.

Anybody got the gin on when they'll be back on the shelves?

If you order it from Amazon and chose 1 day (overnight) shipping I bet it magically become in stock and youll get it next week.

I see it in stock at adorama
http://www.adorama.com …AFU.html?searchinfo=400mm (external link)

I had the same problem yesterday when ordering my 300mm f/4L IS lens. It was out of stock at B&H (also noticed the 400mm out of stock too)

But it was in stock at Adorama.
I ordered 2nd day delivery, and it will be here today (not tomorrow as I expected)

Are there that many aspiring bird photographers out there? Or people just want to spend away their tax refunds??

Thanks, Debbie. I checked Adorama this morning and it was out of stock. Maybe that means my usual outlet will have it by next week.

Either way, looks like I can put my hands on one.

No idea, TMS.

I've been shooting the 100-400 with excellent success for four years, and I'll hold onto it because it is unparalleled when it comes to the combination of IQ and flexibility for all-around nature as well as outdoor candid wedding photography, but the prime can do a few things slightly better/faster than the zoom, and it's time for me to add that tool to my toolbag.

That being said, there's really nothing rushing me but my own impatience. You know, once the decision is made, lets get ON with it.

I want one myself too..:) Yeah, I have a 300L F4 IS. I use it with my converter. For once, I would like to shoot birds without the converter. The idea of handholding a 400mm lens may reduce my keeper ratio. I use my monopod on my 300L too.

I thought the reasoning might be "spring" - all the wonderful things to snap!! People are inspired!

Either that, or the tax refund!! LOL

TMS, your 300 f4L/1.4 TC weighs about six ounces more than the 400 f5.6L. Lack of IS is the larger factor, IMO, in handholding the 400 f5.6L, but I'm a monopod guy too, and with attention to solid technique the 400 will work out just fine during those times I prefer it over the 100-400. And with BIF, for example, lack of IS isn't a big deal.

Hi,
I dont know if BH is one you are used to dealing with, but it's been in stock there for the last day or so. Been in and out of stock there several times this week. Ordered one earlier today :D.

Unless you are looking for the imported one.

It was OOS when I checked there. Since you just ordered one, I reckon it's now out of stock again! ;)

I avoid gray market.

Steve, have you looked into KEH.com they show a new one available and a LN-. I bought all my camera gear from them except 16-35. they have great costumer service. My used 24-70 was listed as EX, it came in the original box with everything and the box did not look like it had been open and the lenses did not look like it was used at all it was a tack sharp copy.
