If the gods would work their magic on my checkbook I'd be more inclined to listen when they point me toward the costly lenses. :)

Do it Steve, the 400 5.6L is just a gateway drug to the big guns. You know you want one.

I've got two words for you. "Come on..." :D

I'm taking pictures of everything, so go ahead and take this place away from me.

Well, I've shot all three of Canon's big girls (400 f2.8, 500, 600) and loved every minute of the time I've spent with the "phat ladies."

But I have to live within the means of my business, and much as I love nature and avian (I've been a birder since I was 11), most of my income is derived from weddings and guided photo excursions, and neither of those revenue streams is benefited by going strongly into debt and strapping on 8 to 12 lbs of glass.

But of course you ARE right. I do WANT one! Or TWO! So send your Canon gods my way, eh? :D

Well if it makes you feel any better I started with the 400 5.6L as my first "big" white and the image quality compares extremely favorably to it's big brothers.

I know.

And I've been sneaking around the woods for 35 years. Woodscraft often takes the place of reach, and it's darn hard to practice woodscraft with 12 lbs of 600mm and all the extra poundage of the tripod/head weighing you down.
