Hello -

I am looking for a very affordable replacement for my Rebel kit lens and I've been looking seriously at these two options, which from what information I've been able to find, both appear very promising. Does anyone have any opinions about choosing one over the other? I'd love to hear what anyone has to say in this regard. Also, I think I have a good idea, but if anyone has opinions on what I should be paying for one of these, I'd love to hear that too!

Thanks in advance for the help!!!!!

I was waiting for someone else to respond, but since they hav'n yet, here is my 2 cents.

I do not have the EF 28- 105, but I do own the 35-105. These are rather old lenses, and the 35-105 is somewhat noisy and slow to focus. The IQ is just so so. I must add that I own L lenses, so I'm not exactly unbaised.

There is another older lens, that I own, that provides quite good IQ. In its day there were many glowing reviews of it. The lens is the EF 28-70mm f3.5-f4.5 ll.

Here is a review on Photozon, also check out their review of the EF 28-105mm f3.5-4.5

Best wishes, Don

These lenses may not be suitable for replacing your kit lens, since it starts at 28/35mm on the wide end, which is not wide at all on your camera. They would be more likely supplementing the focal range of the kit lens.

I have the 28~105, and a 35~135 (AF motor is dying). The 28~105 is quite good actually for the price. Back in the film days, I have known at least 2 professionals that had this lens in their bag, and the results they produced with this lens were excellent. Between the two, I would recommend getting the 28~105.

Both of those are older, not the greatest but inexpensive lenses. Why not the new kit 18-55 IS? It is less than $200. Then maybe try the new 55-205 IS which is also a bargain.

Does anyone know when they'll be shipping the 18-55 IS in the US?

I have only used the old FD 35-105 not the new one, but I do own the 28-105 II and love it. Sure it has it's limitations, but stop it down a bit and it's a wonderful lens for the money. As long as you're not printing over 8x10 it's great!
